CAMEROON FAST FACTS
Cameroon, officially the Republic of Cameroon, is a country in Central Africa. It shares boundaries with Nigeria to the west and north, Chad to the northeast, the Central African Republic to the east, and Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and the Republic of the Congo to the south. Its coastline lies on the Bight of Biafra, part of the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean.
Due to its strategic position at the crossroads between West Africa and Central Africa, it has been categorized as being in both camps. Its nearly 27 million people speak 250 native languages, in addition to the national tongues of English and French, or both.
Christianity is the majority religion in Cameroon, with significant minorities practicing Islam and traditional faiths. It has experienced tensions from the English-speaking territories, where politicians have advocated for greater decentralization and even complete separation or independence (as in the Southern Cameroons National Council).
Our choice of volunteer projects in Cameroon include: working with orphans, women empowerment, healthcare/ medical electives, teaching English, sports coaching and much more. We also provide short-term volunteer placements to those who have just 2 weeks in hand and want to explore Africa while engaging in some kind of philanthropic work.
WHY VOLUNTEER IN CAMEROON
Cameroon is Africa’s throbbing heart, a sultry mosaic of active volcanoes, white-sand beaches, thick rainforest and magnificent parched landscapes broken up by the bizarre rock formations of the Sahel. Despite all this beauty approximately 40% of 20 million people live in poverty or inadequate conditions.
Life expectancy is very low – the average person only lives to 52 years of age. International charities like Go Volunteer Africa and local NGO’s have been working on the ground for many years with long-term aims of improving facilities and helping local people out of poverty.
In Cameroon you can volunteer in places like French-speaking Douala or English-speaking Buea alongside dedicated locals at community based projects that serve some of the most vulnerable populations in the region. You can apply help children, communities and exotic wildlife.
