Since Go Volunteer Africa started supporting vulnerable children and families in Cameroon, many families’ conditions have improved over the past years, and Go Volunteer Africa is continuing to provide support to needy children and families through our Cameroon childcare volunteer project. As a volunteer, your daily schedule will depend on the activities that you are interested in. A normal day schedule for a Cameroon childcare volunteer will involve waking up early.
Limbe: Limbé (known as Victoria from 1858 to 1982) is a seaside city in the South-West Region of Cameroon, At the 2005 Census, the population was 84,223. The city name Limbe is generally held to originate from a mispronunciation of the name of a German engineer called Limburgh.
Oral narratives hold that this engineer is responsible for constructing a bridge across one of the rivers in the city. Over a period of time, this river came to be associated with this engineer. In 1982, a presidential decree signed by president Ahmadou Babatoura Ahidjo, a changed the city name from Victoria to Limbe.
Limbe is located on a bay against the backdrop of a major mountain range. Black sand beaches make Limbe one of two coastal towns (Kribi being the other) that are popular among Western tourists. Attractions include the Limbe Wildlife Centre and Limbe Botanical Gardens also the Bimbia slave trade route . The Germans left a Bismarck tower in the vicinity of Limbe. It is the home to the Bakweri people.
ARRIVAL & AIRPORT PICKUP
After you have booked and confirmed your placement, please book your flights to arrive at Douala International Airport in Douala. A member of staff from our local partner organization in Cameroon will meet you on arrival at the airport and take you to the volunteer guest house which will be your base for volunteering. This airport services numerous international carriers. Cameroon has good connections to destinations throughout Europe, the Asia- Pacific region, USA and Africa.
Orientation and Placement will be done the next day. Generally, your volunteer orientation is an overview of the project’s mission, expectations and introduction to the local community and project site. Following your arrival in Cameroon you will be given a presentation by the co-coordinating project team to prepare you for the work you will be doing.
All families and children we support live in rural or semi urban areas across the country. They mostly survive off farming but are affected by climate changes and they often produce less food than they need to feed their families. Malnutrition is therefore a problem and many children under the age of five suffer from chronic hunger and are not growing as they should.
Vulnerable children and families, we are supporting under our programs, often have no governmental safety net to help them when they don’t have a home or enough money for food. The government is making some improvement medical care access, but in rural communities the situation is really alarming and many people may have to travel hours to see a doctor, sometimes even on foot because there is no public transport and they can’t afford the cost of a private car to get there. These long journeys often make the illness worse – by the time they reach a doctor it may well be too late.
It is our responsibility to make sure that these children get their hope restored through our Cameroon childcare volunteer program. Join our childcare volunteer program in Cameroon and work together with us bringing a change. Make the children happy. Show them love and care. Equip them with skills that will help them earn a living in future. Play with them. Spend time talking to them. Most of these children are traumatized by the experiences that they go through. So counseling them is a requirement. It is in such sessions that a child gains trust in you and once they gain your trust, they open up and this makes it easier on how to help them or even reunite them with their families.
You do not have to be a professional to get involved, though some skills are highly prized; you simply need an open heart and a desire to improve the individual understanding of children and the world in general.

Volunteers are provided accommodation in a volunteer house or in a homestay accommodation managed by the local coordinating team. Three meals a day (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) are provided to the participants from Monday – Sunday. The accommodations are neat and clean. Accommodation is shared amongst volunteers on the ‘same gender sharing’ basis rooms. Wifi internet, warm water is not guaranteed.
The homes are close to useful amenities like banks, ATM’s, currency exchanges, restaurants, cafes and shopping places. All placements are around 10 – 30 minutes from the accommodation. At some point volunteers might be on the move and hence we suggest also bringing a sleeping mat and sleeping bag/pillow for travel and weekends away on adventures. Bathrooms are usually shared. There is a lounge area for relaxing, reading, or watching movies.
Our program is for anyone sixteen years and above who loves service above self and social experiences with people from all over the world. We also accepts volunteers of 15+ years of age if they are in a group with a guardian or supervisor above 18years. Volunteers under 15 years old are only considered when accompanied by a parent/guardian. There isn’t a maximum age limit, though a reasonable fitness level is necessary. Families are encouraged to apply and are welcome!
