Go Volunteer Africa recruits and places doctors, nurses, surgeons, midwives, and other medical professionals to work alongside local practitioners in Tanzania. Our Tanzania medical volunteering project roles range from assisting local doctors with regular treatments to working with rural health workers to help establish more sustainable standards of health and nutrition with the help of a good diet and supplements.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
- Taking rounds of the wards, maintaining files
- Getting actively involved in the daily work of the hospital
- Shadowing professionals medics and assist whenever needed
- Treating minor injuries, vaccinations etc. (depending on skills)
- Assist patients (getting them from one service point to another)
- Professionals can get involved depending on the medical experience
- Doing routine patient checkups like measure Blood pressure, pulse, check fever etc.
There is an obvious lack of manpower and resources in the local hospitals, which are located in the outer city areas and sub-urban areas. Since many health centers lack modern facilities, or have broken equipment and lack of staff, the placements are very challenging. Volunteers need to bring their own medical equipment, gloves, lab coat, medical scrubs and appropriate shoes.
PROJECT LOCATIONS
You can join our Tanzania Medical volunteer project in Arusha, Moshi or Bukoba and Biharamulo. All project sites offer a very meaningful volunteer experience.
Arusha is a city in north eastern Tanzania and the capital of the Arusha Region, located at the base of volcanic Mt. Meru. It’s a gateway to safari destinations and to Africa’s highest peak, 5,895m Mt. Kilimanjaro, lying some 100 kilometers northeast. To the west lies Serengeti National Park, home to wildlife including lions, rhinoceros, giraffes and leopards.
Moshi is a town in northern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border. It’s known as a gateway to Kilimanjaro National Park, home to Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. Trails run up the mountain’s cloud-ringed, snow-capped dome, through alpine forests and meadows home to elephants and leopards. One of Tanzania’s major coffee-producing hubs, Moshi is known for its coffee farms and auctions.
Bukoba is a city, situated in the north west of Tanzania on the south western shores of Lake Victoria. It is the capital of the Kagera region, and the administrative seat for Bukoba Urban District. The city is served by Bukoba Airport and regular ferry connections to and from Mwanza, as well as roads linking to Uganda’s Rakai District for the cross border car commuters with plans underway for a standard gauge railway construction to fulfil the high ambitions of Uganda.
Biharamulo is a town in northwestern Tanzania. It is the district headquarter of Biharamulo District. Biharamulo used to be a German administrative centre in colonial times. Biharamulo Game Reserve is located north of the town.
The town was the administrative centre of German East Africa during the late 19th century until World War I. Since then it has remained part of the Biharamulo District. Trunk road T4 from Mwanza to Bukoba passes by the town and trunk road T9 to Kigoma Region start in Biharamulo.
ARRIVAL & AIRPORT PICKUP
After you have booked and confirmed your placement, please book your flights to arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport in Arusha City for projects in Arusha and Moshi. For projects based in North Western Tanzania in Bukoba and Baharamulo, book your flights to arrive at the Mwanza Airport, the largest airport in the region. There are international flights from Nairobi, Kisumu, Kigali, and Bujumbura as well as domestic flights from Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Kigoma, Arusha, Zanzibar and others.
Alternatively, visitors heading to North western Tanzania program can fly into Entebbe International Airport (Uganda) and then catch a bus to Tanzania (Bukoba) from Kampala to cross the overland into Tanzania. This can actually be a more affordable option, but remember that you will need to pay $50 USD for a Ugandan visa.
A member of staff from our local partner organization will meet you on arrival at Airport or bus station. The airports service numerous international carriers. Tanzania has good connections to destinations throughout Europe, the Asia- Pacific region, USA and Africa.
ORIENTATION
Orientation and Placement will be done the next day. Generally, your volunteer orientation is an overview of the project’s mission, expectations and introduction to the local community and project site. Following your arrival in Tanzania you will be given a presentation by the co-coordinating project team to prepare you for the work you will be doing.
PROJECT DETAILS
Go Volunteer Africa strives to improve the health conditions of children and adults in Tanzania through our Tanzania medical volunteering project. Go Volunteer Africa has set up activities with both small health clinics and large government hospitals in Tanzania. All our projects have one similar goal of improving the provision of healthcare and of preventative health education to under-served populations across Tanzania.
If you are currently studying or recently graduated we have medical volunteer programs and internships which will boost your resume / CV and allow you to help people in the developing world. Lots of people apply every year and this Tanzania medical volunteering project is perfect if you are planning a career in healthcare.
Volunteers with professional credentials, or those currently enrolled in medical/nursing school are welcome. The type of hands on work you will be allocated will depend to an extent on your own abilities and capabilities, which is understandable given that you will be dealing with patient health and safety.
Volunteers/Interns are not allowed to perform the major identification or surgery works. Most of the time volunteers help doctors or work as an assistant to doctors. You will be involved in aspects of the day-to-day running of the hospitals, observing or directly assisting, where possible. You can help out in simple but practical ways, vastly increasing your own knowledge and understanding of medical practice.
Volunteers measure BP, temperature, height, weight assist doctors and medical staffs with health center tasks. You also help in health camps (if any), distribute medicines, provide tips to patients on health, nutrition and sanitation and counseling patients, and involve yourself in the treatment for minor injuries or wounds and keeping patient records.
Your exact role within the hospital or clinic will be determined by your level of medical experience as well as by the enthusiasm and effort which you show to the local staff. Pre-university interns usually start by observing the doctors and nurses. You may find more practical opportunities arise once you get to know the local staff and if you can demonstrate a good understanding of local medical conditions.
Facilities within the hospitals and clinics are basic and treatments are sometimes not of the standard we would expect in developed world. You should be prepared to see some shocking cases, and try not to get emotionally involved with the patients. Your working hours will usually be decided on a weekly basis and most volunteers work from Monday to Friday and have the weekends free.
This medical volunteering project in Tanzania offers diverse experience as volunteers can be placed in a variety of medical settings, including public and private hospitals, clinics and community outreaches in under-resourced locations around Tanzania.
