Arusha is a city in north eastern Tanzania and the capital of the Arusha Region, located at the base of volcanic Mt. Meru. It’s a gateway to safari destinations and to Africa’s highest peak, 5,895m Mt. Kilimanjaro, lying some 100 kilometers northeast. To the west lies Serengeti National Park, home to wildlife including lions, rhinoceros, giraffes and leopards.
Moshi is a town in northern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border. It’s known as a gateway to Kilimanjaro National Park, home to Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. Trails run up the mountain’s cloud-ringed, snow-capped dome, through alpine forests and meadows home to elephants and leopards. One of Tanzania’s major coffee-producing hubs, Moshi is known for its coffee farms and auctions.
Bukoba is a city, situated in the north west of Tanzania on the south western shores of Lake Victoria. It is the capital of the Kagera region, and the administrative seat for Bukoba Urban District. The city is served by Bukoba Airport and regular ferry connections to and from Mwanza, as well as roads linking to Uganda’s Rakai District for the cross border car commuters with plans underway for a standard gauge railway construction to fulfil the high ambitions of Uganda.
Biharamulo is a town in northwestern Tanzania. It is the district headquarter of Biharamulo District. Biharamulo used to be a German administrative centre in colonial times. Biharamulo Game Reserve is located north of the town.
The town was the administrative centre of German East Africa during the late 19th century until World War I. Since then it has remained part of the Biharamulo District. Trunk road T4 from Mwanza to Bukoba passes by the town and trunk road T9 to Kigoma Region start in Biharamulo.
ARRIVAL & AIRPORT PICKUP
After you have booked and confirmed your placement, please book your flights to arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport in Arusha City for projects in Arusha and Moshi. For projects based in North Western Tanzania in Bukoba and Baharamulo, book your flights to arrive at the Mwanza Airport, the largest airport in the region. There are international flights from Nairobi, Kisumu, Kigali, and Bujumbura as well as domestic flights from Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Kigoma, Arusha, Zanzibar and others.
Alternatively, visitors heading to North western Tanzania program can fly into Entebbe International Airport (Uganda) and then catch a bus to Tanzania (Bukoba) from Kampala to cross the overland into Tanzania. This can actually be a more affordable option, but remember that you will need to pay $50 USD for a Ugandan visa.
A member of staff from our local partner organization will meet you on arrival at Airport or bus station. The airports service numerous international carriers. Tanzania has good connections to destinations throughout Europe, the Asia- Pacific region, USA and Africa.
Orientation and Placement will be done the next day. Generally, your volunteer orientation is an overview of the project’s mission, expectations and introduction to the local community and project site. Following your arrival in Tanzania you will be given a presentation by the co-coordinating project team to prepare you for the work you will be doing.
Our Tanzania community volunteer program offers diverse projects and each brings a unique, exciting experience. The overall aim of the projects is one of improving the community infrastructure, encouraging sustainable activities and capacity building. The people are hard working and appreciative of our contribution to their community and will be incredibly responsive to your presence on the project.
No matter which project you chose in which to volunteer in Tanzania, you will have an important role to play and your efforts will be greatly appreciated. School children will benefit from the knowledge you impart, your conservation efforts will contribute towards protecting local wildlife, and you will be part of preserving some of the extraordinary ways of life in this country.
These volunteering placements at the Tanzania community volunteer program offer you the chance to join a building, childcare, sports and/or women’s empowerment project. Bring your enthusiasm, team spirit and flexibility to work where needed while volunteering and living at the heart of a community. Although the work may occasionally be arduous, it will be rewarding and fulfilling, giving you an unforgettable experience and the opportunity to make a real difference!
Your day to day involvement will depend upon the main focus of the program at the time of your visit, however, volunteers can typically expect to be involved within a range of activities which could include child care, after school homework clubs, NGO admin work, editing and contributing towards the NGO’s monthly magazine, fundraising activities, family outreach work and health awareness. We also coordinate a number of school construction programs which you may have the opportunity to help coordinate and get involved with, depending on the work program going on at the time of your stay.
You will have the opportunity to try different roles and projects, dependent on your interests and skills. These Tanzania volunteer opportunities do not require specialized skills (although these would be an advantage), and we accept volunteers for both short and long-term placements, all the year round.
The first few days of your placement will be orientation and adjusting to Tanzanian life. After this initial period, your placement work at the Tanzania community volunteer program will begin. The type of work you are involved with will be dependent on your interests, abilities, level of experience as well as your comfort levels.

Accommodation is shared amongst volunteers on the ‘same gender sharing’ basis rooms. Wifi internet, warm water is not guaranteed.
The homes are close to useful amenities like banks, ATM’s, currency exchanges, restaurants, cafes and shopping places. All placements are around 10 – 30 minutes from the accommodation. At some point volunteers might be on the move and hence we suggest also bringing a sleeping mat and sleeping bag/pillow for travel and weekends away on adventures. Bathrooms are usually shared. There is a lounge area for relaxing, reading, or watching movies.

Volunteers under 16 years old are only considered when accompanied by a parent/guardian. There isn’t a maximum age limit, though a reasonable fitness level is necessary. Families are encouraged to apply and are welcome!
