KENYA: Slum Volunteer Project

Kenya Slum Volunteer Project

The Kenya slum volunteer project run by Go Volunteer Africa will give you a great opportunity to share your skills and time with disadvantaged children in Kenya. The Kenya slum volunteer project is always tailored for the participating volunteer to suit their skills, interests and needs of the slum community.

Kenya has the largest urban-slum in Africa. Kenya’s two main slums Kibera and Soweto are sections of Nairobi city distinguished by poverty and dreadful living conditions. There are approximately 2.5 million slum dwellers in about 200 settlements in Nairobi representing 60% of the Nairobi population and occupying just 6% of the land.

Kenya Slum Volunteer Project

Kibera houses about 500,000 of these people. Kibera is the biggest slum in Africa and one of the biggest in the world and Soweto not nearly as big as the world famous Kibera, is about 3 kms in length and 1 km in width and this tiny area has over 250,000 people living in it.

Go Volunteer Africa is working with our development partner in Nairobi to improve the living conditions of slum dwellers of Kibera and Soweto in Nairobi, Kenya. Go Volunteer Africa supports various community development projects like slum schools, health clinics and various community development projects through our Kenya Slum Volunteer Project.

The living conditions of the slum people is extremely shocking to the most. There are no roads, sewage systems, no clean water, no schools and no hospitals. Slum communities face various challenges and are a big problem in Kenya.  As an organization, we have been playing our part to ensure that children and women in slums of Nairobi find a better life. As a volunteer, your services will go a long way in improving the livelihood of these children and their families.

PROJECT DETAILS

Living illegally without homes, families are detached from any economic, social or educational lifeline. Go Volunteer Africa is carrying out a number of community improvement services in these two slums and we offer a range of slum volunteer opportunities in Nairobi.

Kenya Slum Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers can teach English, Math and organize extracurricular activities for the little slum dwellers.  This provides the opportunity for children to learn basic skills such as how to read and write or simple math. By learning elementary knowledge such as this the children are able to apply the skills to their daily lives.

Go Volunteer Africa recruits and places volunteers from various backgrounds into community service projects in these slums – whatever your skillsets or your passion – we shall utilize it.  Our Kenya slum volunteer project will offer you a very meaningful rewarding life experience.

Volunteers in our slum volunteer project can teach English, give a helping hand in healthcare or share a valuable skill, you can utilize your creativity and come up with a developmental project to improve the living conditions of slum people. The living conditions of the slum people is extremely shocking to the most. There are no roads, sewage systems, no clean water, no schools and no hospitals.

VOLUNTEER ACCOMMODATION

Volunteers are provided accommodation in a volunteer house or in a homestay accommodation managed by the local coordinating team. Three meals a day (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) are provided to the participants from Monday – Sunday. The accommodations are neat and clean. Accommodation is shared amongst volunteers on the ‘same gender sharing’ basis rooms. Wifi internet, warm water is not guaranteed.

The accommodation is always close to useful amenities like banks, ATM’s, currency exchanges, restaurants, cafes and shopping places. All placements are around 30 minutes from the accommodation. At some point volunteers might be on the move and hence we suggest also bringing a sleeping mat and sleeping bag/pillow for travel and weekends away on adventures. Bathrooms are usually shared. There is a lounge area for relaxing, reading, or watching movies.

AGE REQUIREMENT

Our program is for anyone eighteen years and above who loves service above self and social experiences with people from all over the world. We also accepts volunteers of 16+ years of age if they are in a group with a guardian or supervisor above 25years. Volunteers under 16 years old are only considered when accompanied by a parent/guardian. There isn’t a maximum age limit, though a reasonable fitness level is necessary. Families are encouraged to apply and are welcome!

VISAS

Visitors to Kenya require a visa unless they come from one of the visa exempt countries. All visitors must hold a passport valid for 6 months. Kenya introduced an e-Visa system from 2 July 2015. According to the government an application should be done at least 7 days in advance and visitors can stay for up to 90 days with e-visa. Visa on arrival is still available and visitors can stay for up to 90 days with this visa.

From February 2014 Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda began issuing an East African Tourist Visa. The visa costs 100 USD and has no restrictions on citizens of any country. The visa is a non-extendable multiple-entry 90-day visa that has to be first used to enter the country that issued the visa.
