UGANDA: Women Volunteer Project

Uganda Women Volunteer Project

The Uganda Women Volunteer Project offers volunteers the opportunity to work alongside local women and families in grassroots community empowerment and development initiatives that promote sustainable livelihoods, food security, nutrition, entrepreneurship, and family wellbeing.

This hands-on program is designed to empower women through practical skills, income-generating activities, sustainable farming, and family development projects that help strengthen households and improve quality of life. Volunteers become part of ongoing community initiatives that support women in building self-reliance, improving household nutrition, increasing family income, and creating better opportunities for their children and communities.

Whether you have experience in agriculture, education, business, health, community development, or simply a desire to help, your contribution can make a meaningful difference. A unique feature of this program is that most activities take place at a dedicated community development centre in Mukono District. The centre serves as a hub for women’s empowerment, family development, sustainable agriculture, entrepreneurship, nutrition education, and community training.

The centre was established with support from Go Volunteer Africa, former volunteers, donors, and local community members who shared a vision of creating a safe and sustainable space where women and families can access skills training, livelihood opportunities, and community support services.

Women Volunteering Project Uganda

PROJECT LOCATION

This project will take you to the heart of Uganda where you get involved in meaningful volunteer work. The trip starts and ends in Mukono. Volunteers joining the program will be based in Mukono. Mukono is one of the most relaxed and attractive suburbs, east of Kampala (the capital city of Uganda). Mukono is a great place to stay if you want to explore Uganda’s fascinating capital city or the adventure capital- Jinja.

ARRIVAL & AIRPORT PICKUP

After you have booked and confirmed your placement, please book your flights to arrive at Entebbe International Airport. Our Coordinator will arrange a pickup for you from the airport in Entebbe at agreed time and they will drive you to the volunteer home outskirts of Kampala.

ORIENTATION

Orientation and Placement will be done the next day. Generally, your volunteer orientation is an overview of the project’s mission, expectations and introduction to the local community and project site. Following your arrival in Uganda you will be given a presentation by the co-coordinating project team to prepare you for the work you will be doing.

PROJECT DETAILS

As a volunteer, you will work directly with local women, families, community groups, and project coordinators on a variety of practical activities. Most activities are based at the community centre, where volunteers work alongside local women, project staff, and community members. Depending on ongoing projects and seasonal activities, volunteers may occasionally participate in outreach visits within the surrounding community.

Depending on community needs and your interests, you may assist with:

Kitchen Gardens & Sustainable Farming

One of the most important activities within the program is supporting women and families to grow nutritious food close to their homes.

Volunteer activities may include:

  • Preparing vegetable gardens
  • Planting and maintaining vegetables
  • Seed bed preparation
  • Compost making and organic farming
  • Water conservation practices
  • Harvesting and food preservation
  • Supporting household food production initiatives

These activities help families improve nutrition while reducing household food expenses.

Nutrition & Healthy Living

Good nutrition plays a vital role in family wellbeing.

Volunteers may support:

  • Nutrition awareness activities
  • Healthy meal preparation demonstrations
  • Food preservation techniques
  • Community discussions on balanced diets
  • Promotion of nutritious local foods
  • Family health education initiatives

The goal is to help families make the most of locally available food resources and improve household nutrition.

Backyard Farming Projects

Many women participate in small-scale farming activities that provide both food and income.

Volunteers may assist with:

  • Poultry projects
  • Goat rearing activities
  • Rabbit keeping projects
  • Small livestock management
  • Household farming demonstrations
  • Medicinal herb gardens
  • Sustainable farming techniques

These activities are designed to be practical and suitable for small household spaces.

Women’s Entrepreneurship & Economic Empowerment

Many women operate small businesses that support their families.

Volunteers may assist with:

  • Basic business planning
  • Record keeping
  • Budgeting and savings education
  • Marketing ideas
  • Product development
  • Customer service support
  • Income-generating projects
  • Financial literacy activities

The program encourages women to build sustainable livelihoods and strengthen their economic independence.

Arts, Crafts & Income Generation

Local women often create handmade products that can generate additional income.

Volunteers may help with:

  • Craft production activities
  • Product presentation and packaging
  • Market research
  • Sales support
  • Community exhibitions
  • Fundraising initiatives
  • Developing new product ideas
  • Promoting locally made products

Income generated from these activities helps support women and their families while encouraging entrepreneurship.

Community-Based Approach

Unlike many volunteer programs that operate across multiple locations, this program is centered at a dedicated community development centre in Mukono District. The centre serves as a hub for women, families, youth, and community groups participating in various empowerment and livelihood initiatives.

Most volunteer activities take place within the centre and its surrounding demonstration gardens, training areas, and community outreach spaces. This allows volunteers to build meaningful relationships with participants while contributing to long-term programs that support women and their families.

The centre provides a practical learning environment where women gather for skills training, sustainable farming demonstrations, entrepreneurship activities, nutrition education, arts and crafts production, and family development programs.

Community Outreach & Family Development

Volunteers may also participate in wider family development activities, including:

  • Community outreach programs
  • Home visits
  • Women’s group meetings
  • Youth engagement activities
  • Family support initiatives
  • Community awareness events
  • Livelihood development projects

These activities help strengthen families and build stronger communities.
