In East Africa, millions of children are considered orphans. In Uganda, 12.3 % of children in are orphans. 420,000 of these orphans have lost only a mother and 1,330,000 a father. However, 402,500 of these are total orphans, having lost both parents, and these are the more likely to end up in orphanages.
Kenya alone reporting around 3.6 million orphaned or vulnerable children. Orphaned children in East Africa face challenges like lack of food, inadequate access to healthcare and education, and increased risk of exploitation and abuse.
AIDS and other diseases, armed conflict, natural disasters, forced displacement and extreme poverty leave millions of children orphaned, separated, or on the brink of family breakdown. These children need and have a right to be protected and cared for. We as Go Volunteer Africa Foundation feel we have an obligation to respond.
By sponsoring an orphan, you can help feed, clothe, and educate a young child alone in the world, who without your help, would be forced to fend for themselves in a world of horrors no child should have to face.
Through the GVA Children’s Fund, we provide education, health care, social services, and basic necessities to orphans in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda. For only USD $540 a year, you can make a difference in the life of a child through this program.
With GVA Children’s Fund program we are giving sponsors an opportunity to sponsor one child a time with a “New Life- Startup Kit”. In this program we are following the Chinese saying of “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
Currently, there are over 500 children in the Program (100 children in each country). But the number of children constantly fluctuates as new children apply and approach us for help and sponsored children leave the program.
Your financial support provides for the care of a child in line of support with food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, education and business startup capital.
We don’t want to create dependency but rather independency amongst our beneficiaries and so we ask the sponsors to support an orphan directly with a two years/once off donation and then provide a start-up kit donation in a form of a project (chicken, rabbit, goats, pig, farming or small scale project).
During the first years of sponsorship, children, youths and their guardians will be mentored and trained on carrying and running projects of their interest and to become self-supporting after the sponsor pulls out or choose to support the next child.
You will receive regular updates on your sponsored child’s academic and social progress every 6 months. Your sponsorship will begin upon receipt of your first sponsorship donation. Please allow four to four weeks to hear from your sponsored child.
The children leave the program immediately when they get sponsors for their new life start-up kits, in case they are 18years and not schooling, or they get a two-year academic sponsorship and the third year get a new-life startup kit to help them self-support. Others may stay in the program until when they are 18yrs.
You are always welcome to visit if you have a sponsored child or are interested in one of our programs. You may also want to volunteer your skills with our Child Care Volunteer Projects or generally our organization.
A child needs daily love and encouragement, Go Volunteer Africa Foundation Counselors will continue to support the child and the guardians in many ways till adulthood or as long children feel they can take themselves independently. But since to raise a child is more expensive we would like to make as many children as possible self-sustaining than depending on sponsors all the time.
