As participant in our Liberia childcare volunteer project, you will have to play a significant role by providing the children with proper care, love and warmth. You can also help daycare, orphanage and school staff in daily jobs such as feeding, cleaning, clothing, teaching and playing games with the children.
Our Liberia childcare volunteer project focuses on providing children with a healthy learning environment through interactive games and stories. Volunteers will also be involved in various games and learning exercises to create interest in developing the children’s physical health and potential.
PROJECTS HIGHLIGHTS

PROJECT LOCATION
Zwedru is the capital of Grand Gedeh County, one of the 15 counties in Liberia. Zwedru is located in Tchien District of Grand Gedeh County, near the Cavalla River in the country’s south-eastern region and near the border with Côte d’Ivoire. It is located 350 miles southeast from the capital city of Monrovia.
The town gets its name after the head of a local anteater creek. Zwedru is surrounded by a lot of forests, and lies in a tropical region. The north-western section of Zwedru has an important forest region with rare bird species. Zwedru was known for timber production and its wood products industry.
ARRIVAL & AIRPORT PICKUP
After you have booked and confirmed your placement, please book your flights to arrive at Roberts International Airport in Monrovia. A member of staff from our local partner organization in Liberia will meet you on arrival at Airport and take you to the volunteer guest house or host family which will be your base for volunteering. This airport services numerous international carriers. Liberia has good connections to destinations throughout Europe, the Asia- Pacific region, USA and Africa.
ORIENTATION
Orientation and Placement will be done the next day. Generally, your volunteer orientation is an overview of the project’s mission, expectations and introduction to the local community and project site. Following your arrival in Liberia you will be given a presentation by the co-coordinating project team to prepare you for the work you will be doing.
PROJECT DETAILS
Go Volunteer Africa’s Liberia childcare volunteer project provides vital help to the efforts of the local staff and in return, the local staff will be on hand to assist you throughout your volunteer placement, and their experience is invaluable in helping volunteers plan their sessions.
There are many private schools, orphanages and children centers in Liberia that educate, house and feed needy children and orphans. You can teach primary classes, including academic subjects and life skills, and organize sport and art activities for the children. Let us know what you’re interested in and we’ll get you into the best placement.
With limited staff, resources and facilities, our local teams are struggling to provide care, love and support to these vulnerable children. Being hugely understaffed, we have few learning or extra-curricular activities. Go Volunteer Africa through volunteers is able to provide the children’s centers’ with support and help.
These could be in the form of improving the existing facilities, assisting the staff, teaching and helping with the general running and administration of the orphanage/children’s home. Volunteers usually help in refurbishing existing buildings, improving facilities, teaching Basic English, drawing, drama, conducting games etc.
At these children’s centres you are typically greeted with big hugs, toothless smiles and children curious to touch and get your attention. These children are here due to poverty, disabilities, and homelessness and also as the only way to attend school.
Through Go Volunteer Africa’s Liberia childcare volunteer project you can make a lasting difference in these young lives. You can care for children in many ways. Often no special skills are required, as volunteers are needed to spend time playing, reading, exercising and share time with the children. Since the host project is short-staffed and the volunteers’ attention gives the children the extra love they need.

LONGTERM VOLUNTEER WORK

VOLUNTEER ACCOMMODATION
Volunteers are provided accommodation in a volunteer house or in a homestay accommodation managed by the local coordinating team. Three meals a day (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) are provided to the participants from Monday – Sunday. The accommodations are neat and clean. Accommodation is shared amongst volunteers on the ‘same gender sharing’ basis rooms. Wifi internet, warm water is not guaranteed.
The homes are close to useful amenities like banks, ATM’s, currency exchanges, restaurants, cafes and shopping places. All placements are around 10 – 30 minutes from the accommodation. At some point volunteers might be on the move and hence we suggest also bringing a sleeping mat and sleeping bag/pillow for travel and weekends away on adventures. Bathrooms are usually shared. There is a lounge area for relaxing, reading, or watching movies.
AGE REQUIREMENT
Our program is for anyone eighteen years and above who loves service above self and social experiences with people from all over the world. We also accepts volunteers of 16+ years of age if they are in a group with a guardian or supervisor above 25years. Volunteers under 16 years old are only considered when accompanied by a parent/guardian. There isn’t a maximum age limit, though a reasonable fitness level is necessary. Families are encouraged to apply and are welcome!
VISAS
Visitors to Liberia must obtain a visa from one of the Liberian diplomatic missions unless they come from one of the visa exempt countries. Yellow fever vaccination is required. A broader visa on arrival for tourists was announced in January 2019.
WEEKENDS AND FREE-TIME
Over the weekends or evenings, participants are free to eat out and explore the different delights that Liberia has to offer. We arrange city day tours and long-weekend safaris. No matter what your interests, there is always something for everyone to enjoy!
