“Promoting Sustainable Development”

We provide long-term sustainable solutions to problems in rural Africa which are mainly caused by poverty.

GVA Foundation – Africa designs and conducts programs which contribute to the welfare and social productivity of disadvantaged individuals and communities with an emphasis on children and youth.

We address some of the most pervasive problems in rural Africa, including HIV/AIDS, malaria, hunger, education, poverty, access to clean drinking water, and orphaned children. In addition, we focus on empowering the youth of Africa through leadership and skills training.

Mission: Providing resources to achieve sustainable development in under-resourced areas through effective community education and development of projects.

Vision: Self-sustaining individuals and communities free from extreme poverty.

GVA Foundation – Africa is founded on the principles that our common humanity is more important than our individual differences. We therefore operate on a non-political, non-denominational, and non-sectarian basis, welcoming each and every African in need.

GVA Foundation- Africa reaches out for the furthest and abandoned communities in rural areas of Africa including the exotic Islands. By educating the residents on diseases awareness & prevention, and fostering the creation of self sustaining projects run by the local community, GFA aims to achieve this vision.

Focus on Sustainable Development

Our understanding of ‘Sustainable Development’ is that which focuses on the social, environmental and economic factors that are needed to ensure a development for the existing community that does not affect the ability of future generations to enjoy the same opportunities.

Our strategy focuses on change within the community. We do this in three ways.

1. Investing capital in infrastructure and resources in schools and agricultural projects.

2.Promoting small business development through micro-loans, and

3. Building the skills and knowledge of the individuals.

Together with the communities we have identified 5 key areas where change needs to have a positive impact if poverty is to be beaten in a sustainable fashion.

• Education
• Agriculture
• Health
• Environment
• Community Development

The focus of our programs is on providing resources for sustainable development in under-resourced communities

History

GVA Foundation- Africa (GFA) is formerly Beacon of Hope Uganda (BoHU) a humanitarian service and rural development organization established in 2006 by a visionary young Ugandan Isaac Ssamba with a vision to help those least able to help themselves across Africa.

To help achieve this vision, in 2019, GVA Travel Solutions (the parent company of Go Volunteer Africa) took over the direct operations of Beacon of Hope Uganda to strengthen its development base beyond Uganda.

BoHU has a strong track record in community-based economic and social development and had been a development partner in Uganda for more than 10 years.

Currently GVA Foundation operates in countries where Go Volunteer Africa has development partners.

GVA Foundation-Africa was initiated to support long term projects where Go Volunteer Africa volunteers have worked beyond.

The focus of our programs is on providing resources for sustainable development in under-resourced communities.

Our development philosophy is based on the saying: “help people to help themselves” GVA Foundation wants to give them the tools, the knowledge and the spirit to get this process started. Enhance self-respect and motivation. Ownership and a taste of positive change and success can change a spirit and a life forever!

Work & Approach

Partnership, Participation, Progress

The method by which change is brought about is as important as the change itself. If change is inflicted on a person or community then it is likely to be resisted and the process likely to fail. The process of change must therefore be both desired and inclusive.

Our approach is to work in partnership with the community, collaborating with them, ensuring their full and active participation in the process. This reduces our role to simply one of facilitators, mentors and monitors.

Our role in the partnerships we build with the community’s formal and informal leaders is to bring external knowledge, skills, know-how and funds to the table to complement, enhance and build upon the existing skills, knowledge and passion. In this way we help turn their words and aspirations into projects that can help deliver what is needed to assist in the holistic process of change.

The communities understand that no single project is going to alleviate their poverty but that a number of projects focused on the 5 key areas will have a lasting positive impact and ought to provide them with the skills, knowledge and wherewithal to defeat poverty. It is important therefore for our donors also to understand that each project is but one spoke in the wheel of success and that the strength of the wheel/success comes from the combined efforts of each project.

To achieve our aims we work closely with small Community Based Organizations (CBO’s) under Go Volunteer Africa.

The process of monitoring that we have both adopted and adapted is called ‘Outcome Mapping’ and is a participatory process. The project participants in identifying what success looks like highlight the obstacles that they envisage as are preventing them from achieving that success. We then develop the program around developing the skills, knowledge and opportunities that will facilitate success.

Progress is then measured against the obstacles and the impact is determined through surveys, interviews and group discussions.

VOLUNTEERING WITH US.

GVA Foundation-Africa provides volunteers with meaningful volunteering opportunities. Our volunteer programs include 2 weeks to 24 weeks volunteer work placements all year round.

Enjoy a stimulating and provoking experience by volunteering on one of our projects. The program enables you to absorb the fascinating African cultures whilst sharing your knowledge and skills with the host country. The projects will provide an unforgettable eye opening experience for a gap year, vacation, spring break or career break for groups and individual travelers.

One of the biggest differences you will notice at the end will not be external but will be the difference inside of yourself. Most importantly, you will be changed forever because you will have a greater understanding of another culture, you will challenge your personal limits, and you will develop friendships.

Volunteering opportunities offered, requires flexibility, patience; those who are self-starters, and people who genuinely respect the host people and their culture.

Volunteers never come here to teach the people western ways, nor are here to save the people. Volunteers come to share their energy and time with the people, to experience their culture first hand and to grow themselves.

You may learn a new language, a new culture, and a new way of life. Flexibility and patience are the keys to having a satisfying experience.
