Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa. It is surrounded by six countries: Mali to the north; Niger to the east; Benin to the southeast; Togo and Ghana to the south; and Ivory Coast to the southwest. Its capital is Ouagadougou. In 2017, its population was estimated at just over 20 million. Burkina Faso is a francophone country, with French as the official language of government and business.

Burkina Faso is one of the world’s poorest countries due to poor educational system, poor soils and a lack of infrastructure. The situation appears to be improving and there is a great need for volunteers to support the locals in their effort to development.

But being one of the world’s poorest countries, doesn’t stop the Burkinabes walking with pride. Some of the friendliest faces you’ll see are in the streets of Burkina Faso’s villages and towns. Dancing is a favourite national pastime and centuries-old traditions are part of everyday life. There are hippos to be spotted, waterfalls to be admired, markets to be explored and songs to be sung.

The tourist industry has not really taken off in Burkina Faso as the country doesn't have many big-ticket tourists attractions and, as such, the facilities are a little rough, but the warmth of welcome and the friendliness of the Burkinabé people is unique. Wherever you go you’ll be greeted with a memorable bonne arrivée (‘welcome’) and a handshake.

The main attraction in Burkina Faso is without a doubt the breathtaking natural landscapes which range from the rugged outcrops of the Sindou Peaks to the abundant wildlife that can be found at Lake Tengrela or Karfiguéla Waterfalls and Domes of Fabedougou. The cities in Burkina Faso do not offer many sights or tourist attractions as such but the music and other forms of performing arts on offer are truly some of the greatest on offer in Africa.

There are many ways in which Burkina Faso is a unique volunteer in Africa destination and sadly, it is often overlooked by volunteers deciding to travel to more popular volunteer Africa destinations. Because of misconceptions about Burkina Faso's, many travelers have skewed ideas about the reality of "modern-day" Burkina Faso.

Volunteers need to be 18 years or over to participate, unless volunteering with a parent or guardian. All volunteers are required to have adequate volunteer travel insurance and provide a criminal background check to Go Volunteer Africa's local Coordinators on arrival in the country.

Safaris, day and cultural tours can be organized over the weekends for volunteers. This is a fantastic opportunity to explore Burkina Faso's vibrant cities, rich culture and wildlife. There is a lot to see and do in Burkina Faso.

Go Volunteer Africa programs are run in partnership with in-country NGOs, small community based organizations, local research institutes, academic organizations and conservation agencies. Project descriptions and information are supplied directly by our partners or field staff and are accurate at time of publishing.

We aim to keep information up to date and accurate, however, the nature of our projects and programs and in particular the fact that they are constantly evolving and developing in response to changing needs means that project activities, travel schedules, tour itineraries and daily timetables can change overnight and without notice.
