GUINEA-BISSAU: Women’s Empowerment Volunteer Project

volunteer in Guinea-Bissau

Go Volunteer Africa’s Guinea-Bissau Women’s Empowerment Volunteer Project gives international volunteers an opportunity to support locally based initiatives that promote education, skills development, economic participation and community involvement among women and young people in São Domingos, Cacheu Region.

Volunteers work alongside local community teams and organizations, contributing practical support to activities based on local needs and priorities. The project is suitable for volunteers who are interested in women’s empowerment, community development, education, livelihoods and social development and want to gain experience while contributing to locally led initiatives.

WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT VOLUNTEERING

Women play an important role in the social and economic life of communities across Guinea-Bissau. The women’s empowerment project supports activities designed to encourage participation, skills development, education and greater opportunities for women and young people.

Depending on current project activities, volunteers may assist with skills-based workshops, educational activities, entrepreneurship support, literacy, community outreach and other initiatives organized with local women and community groups. The exact activities available can vary according to local priorities, project schedules and the skills of participating volunteers.

WHAT WILL YOU DO AS A VOLUNTEER?

Your activities will depend on the current project needs and your interests, skills and experience. You may help organise workshops, support educational activities, assist with skills-development sessions, contribute to community outreach or work alongside local teams supporting women and young people.

Volunteers with backgrounds in business, education, finance, social work, community development, communications or entrepreneurship may be able to contribute relevant skills to appropriate activities. However, professional experience is not required for every role. The most important qualities are respect, willingness to learn, cultural sensitivity and a genuine interest in supporting community-led initiatives.

PROJECT LOCATION

The Women’s Empowerment & Community Development Project is based in São Domingos, in the Cacheu Region of northern Guinea-Bissau, close to the border with Senegal. São Domingos provides a community-based environment where volunteers can experience everyday life while working alongside local people and community project teams. The placement allows volunteers to gain a deeper understanding of local communities while contributing to activities that support education, skills development and participation.

ARRIVAL AND AIRPORT PICKUP

After your volunteer placement has been confirmed, arrange your flight to arrive at Osvaldo Vieira International Airport in Bissau. A member of the local coordinating team will meet you at the airport and assist with your transfer to São Domingos. Pre-departure information, arrival instructions and other practical guidance will be provided before your trip.

ORIENTATION AND PROJECT PLACEMENT

Orientation takes place after arrival and introduces volunteers to the local community, project environment, expectations and daily arrangements. The local coordinating team will explain your role and introduce you to the relevant community organisation, project staff or local partners. Your activities will be agreed according to your interests, skills and the needs of the project at the time of your placement.

SUPPORTING WOMEN-LED INITIATIVES

A central part of the project is supporting initiatives that are already connected to the local community. Volunteers are encouraged to listen and learn from local participants rather than arrive with predetermined solutions. Your role is to contribute useful skills and practical assistance while respecting local knowledge, culture and decision-making. This approach helps ensure that volunteering complements existing community efforts.
