Volunteering Mozambique! Go Volunteer Africa, the leading and largest volunteer travel organization welcomes you to Mozambique. From Tofo’s rustic unspoilt beaches to it’s vibrant marine life and colorful culture, everyone will enjoy this exotic paradise of Mozambique.
Our volunteering Mozambique will introduce participants to palm-fringed beaches and wide expanses of powdery white sand and communities famous for world-class scuba-diving and magnificent creatures that live here – whale sharks and turtles.
Mozambique is one of Africa’s up and coming hot spots, with stunning, white-sand beaches, excellent diving and magical offshore islands. Few destinations on earth can compare to Mozambique. As one of Africa’s most-loved locations, Mozambique offers something unique to those wishing to explore a ‘different’ side to the continent: gone are the game drives and desert tours; in their place, sleepy beach resorts are found beside big, bustling cities such as the nation’s capital, Maputo.

MOZAMBIQUE FAST FACTS
Mozambique, officially the Republic of Mozambique is a country located in Southeastern Africa bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west, and Eswatini (Swaziland) and South Africa to the southwest. The sovereign state is separated from the Comoros, Mayotte and Madagascar by the Mozambique Channel to the east. The capital and largest city of Mozambique is Maputo (known as Lourenço Marques from 1876 to 1976).
Mozambique is endowed with rich and extensive natural resources. The country’s economy is based largely on agriculture, but industry is growing, mainly food and beverages, chemical manufacturing and aluminium and petroleum production. The tourism sector is also expanding.
South Africa is Mozambique’s main trading partner and source of foreign direct investment, while Belgium, Brazil, Portugal and Spain are also among the country’s most important economic partners. Since 2001, Mozambique’s annual average GDP growth has been among the world’s highest. However, the country is still one of the poorest and most underdeveloped countries in the world, ranking low in GDP per capita, human development, measures of inequality and average life expectancy.
The only official language of Mozambique is Portuguese, which is spoken mostly as a second language by about half the population. Common native languages include Tsonga, Makhuwa, Sena, and Swahili. The country’s population of around 29 million is composed of overwhelmingly Bantu people. The largest religion in Mozambique is Christianity, with significant minorities following Islam and African traditional religions.
PROJECT LOCATION:
Our Mozambique volunteer trips starts and ends in Maputo the capital and largest city of Mozambique. Projects are based across the country with major locations being Maputo , Maputo City and Inhambane provinces
Maputo Province / City – the province excludes the city of Maputo (which comprises a separate province). The province has an area of 22,693 km² and a population of 1,968,906 (2017 census). Its capital is the city of Matola.
Maputo is the capital and most populous city of Mozambique. The city is named after chief Maputsu I of the Tembe clan, a subgroup of Tsonga people. Located near the southern end of the country, it is positioned within 120 km (75 miles) of the Eswatini and South Africa borders. The Maputo metropolitan area includes the neighboring city of Matola, and has a total population of 2,717,437. Maputo is a port city, with an economy centered on commerce.
Inhambane is located on the coast in the southern part of the country. It has an area of 68,615 km2 and a population of 1,488,676 (2017 census). The provincial capital is also called Inhambane. The climate is tropical throughout, more humid along the coast and dryer inland. The coast has a number of mangrove swamps.
The province is the second largest grower of cashews (after Nampula), and also produces coconut and citrus fruit (inspiring Mozambique’s most famous poet Craveirinha to write of “The Tasty Tangerines of Inhambane”). The long coastline supports much fishing. The Inhambane Bay area is of some interest for tourism, with a number of beaches, and one of the last remaining populations of dugong in Mozambique.
