Go Volunteer Africa’s Guinea-Bissau Teaching & Education Volunteer Project gives international volunteers the opportunity to support local schools and community education initiatives in São Domingos, Cacheu Region. This project is suitable for volunteers who are passionate about education and want to gain practical experience while contributing to learning opportunities in a local community.
Volunteers work alongside local teachers, educators and community teams to support children and young people through educational activities, classroom assistance, language practice, literacy support and other learning activities based on the needs of the local project.
TEACHING VOLUNTEERING IN GUINEA-BISSAU
Teaching volunteering in Guinea-Bissau focuses on supporting existing educational activities rather than replacing qualified teachers. Depending on the school, community project and current needs, volunteers may assist teachers in classrooms, support individual or small-group learning, help with English language activities, organise educational games and creative activities, or provide additional support to children who need help with their studies. The exact role of each volunteer depends on their skills, experience, interests and the requirements of the local school or project.

WHAT WILL YOU DO AS A TEACHING VOLUNTEER?
Your role will depend on the educational setting and your previous experience. Volunteers may assist teachers during lessons, work with small groups of students, help children practise language skills, organise educational activities or provide additional learning support.
Volunteers with teaching qualifications or professional experience may be able to take on additional responsibilities, subject to the needs and approval of the local project team. The emphasis is on supporting local educators and contributing to existing educational activities, rather than independently managing a classroom without appropriate supervision.
TEACHING CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE
Working with children requires patience, responsibility and respect for local culture and safeguarding practices. Volunteers are expected to follow the instructions of local teachers and project coordinators, maintain appropriate professional boundaries and treat every child with dignity and respect. The project can provide an opportunity to learn about education in Guinea-Bissau while contributing practical assistance to local schools and community initiatives.
PROJECT LOCATION
The Teaching & Education Volunteer Project is based in São Domingos, in the Cacheu Region of northern Gnea-Bissau, close to the border with Senegal. São Domingos provides volunteers with the opportunity to experience everyday community life while participating in locally based educational activities. Volunteers live within the local community and work alongside local project teams, gaining an understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing education in the area.
ARRIVAL AND AIRPORT PICKUP
After your volunteer placement has been confirmed, arrange your flight to arrive at Osvaldo Vieira International Airport in Bissau. A member of the local coordinating team will meet you at the airport and assist with your transfer to São Domingos. Detailed arrival instructions and pre-departure information will be provided before your departure.
ORIENTATION AND TEACHING PLACEMENT
Volunteer orientation takes place after arrival. The orientation introduces you to the local community, project expectations, daily schedule and practical arrangements. You will also be introduced to the relevant school, teacher or local project team. Your teaching placement will be discussed according to your experience, interests and the educational needs available during your stay.

VISAS
Visa requirements for Guinea-Bissau depend on nationality and current entry regulations. Go Volunteer Africa provides pre-departure guidance, while volunteers remain responsible for obtaining the required travel documents and visas.
