BURUNDI DISCOVERY VOLUNTEER TRIP OVERVIEW 

The purpose of this trip is not only to help build infrastructure but to also build lives. This Burundi discovery volunteer trip is great for everyone aged 18 to 65+! Working with local communities in Burundi, volunteers will work alongside the local builders and carpenters, assisting with all levels of building and construction.

This trip will give an experience to wonder about as you take a cultural immersion tour where you will visit the national museum in Gitega, go to the explorers’ memorial where Hannington met with John Speke. Then go to the Kibira National Park, Rusizi National Park, Gishora Drum sanctuary and Ruvubu National Park. Finally, you will visit the southern source of the Nile at Rutovu-the longest River in Africa.

Burundi Volunteer Program

It is a unique opportunity for people of different nationalities, ages, and abilities, social, cultural and religious backgrounds to live, work, and co-operate together. A temporary democratic international community is established for the period of the project and this is itself a fascinating experience.

Through this shared experience, strong friendships develop and every day brings new experiences, both social and personal. The Burundi discovery volunteer trip is a wonderful learning experience on many levels, particularly for languages.

Participants on the trip will visit the cultural museum which displays the ancient traditions and the artifact of Burundi’s history. We will visit the Explorers Memorial and its huge rock where Hannington and John Speke met. This is a good photogenic place so you can take photos from here. Go around the good market and the craft shops around the city.

The team will head to Lake Tanganyika, here you will view the local fishing, you can also play several beach games like volley ball, take a boat ride on the lake, swim, Sun bathe and many more. In the evening, you will enjoy the Gasimbo dance performance as you will see these amazing dancers spinning as if they do have bones in the bodies.

We will head to national parks of Burundi, well you will have a guide nature walk or better yet go for chimps tracking and an encounter with man’s closest relatives; the chimpanzees; red tailed colobus, black and white monkey is a dream to treasure forever! Not forgetting the very many trees species mainly trees found in the montane forests and you will also watch very many bird species like the great blue turaco. 

One this Burundi discovery volunteer trip, we will also visit Rutovu a river stream found in the small forest said to be the southern source of the Nile by several researchers. Here you will do a sight view as a guide will give you the history behind the river stream you will also take some photos.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

We ask volunteers interested in the Burundi discovery volunteer trip to commit at least 14 days (2 weeks) in order to ensure a worthwhile experience. We want every volunteer to feel that their time in Burundi was put to good use and that they had adequate time to make an impact.

Volunteers must be 18 years or older at the time of joining the project (unless if traveling with family). You need to have an open mind and a flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. The volunteer should bring energy and enthusiasm to make a difference and should be willing to work outdoors and get their hands dirty.

Burundi Tour Safari

Participants must be fit and healthy at the time of joining the program and willing to work hard. You don’t need any previous work-related experience, to partake on these projects (except those joining as medical volunteers). 

VOLUNTEER WORK SCHEDULE

You will be working from Monday to Friday in a small team of like-minded individuals. The day-to-day work program will vary according to the program of the day. Whatever your contribution, you are sure to find this project incredibly rewarding when you see the progress the project has made.

ARRIVAL, AIRPORT TRANSFERS & LIVING

Your arrival into Burundi will be on a Sunday. Your orientation for your volunteer program in Burundi will begin on Monday. You will spend the day learning about life in Burundi and preparing for your upcoming volunteer program.

Go Volunteer Africa makes great efforts to provide the best of living standards to its volunteers. Volunteers are picked up from the Melchior Ndadaye International Airport by a representative and transferred to volunteers’ house.

In Bujumbura, our international volunteers are hosted at a beautiful house. The facility is equipped with a few modern amenities. Those volunteers who are arriving overland or are already in Burundi can be provided with a pick from city centre or they arrive at the facility on their own.

ORIENTATION

A half-day orientation will be provided by members of our local team on the next day after arrival. The orientation would cover topics such as introduction to the project, general information about the project, safety Tips / Guidelines, customs, health guidelines, community, and do’s and don’ts. You will also be given a tour of the local surrounding area which will help you in getting to know the area around.

When your volunteer vacation comes to an end, you’ll be tired and a bit dirty. But, you will have made a big difference in the lives of local community. You’ll leave the village with visible proof of the work you’ve done and happy memories of the people you’ve helped
