PROJECT LOCATION
Our Zimbabwe volunteer trip starts and ends in Victoria Fall town. Victoria Falls is a town in western Zimbabwe and a gateway to the massive waterfall of the same name. Here, the Zambezi River plummets over a cliff and into the Boiling Pot before flowing through a series of gorges. The Devil’s Pool, a natural infinity pool, is on the edge of a sheer drop. Spanning the river is 1905 Victoria Falls Bridge. The surrounding Zambezi National Park is home to white rhinos and elephants.
ARRIVAL & AIRPORT PICKUP
After you have booked and confirmed your placement, please book your flights to arrive at Victoria Falls International Airport. A member of staff from our local partner organization in Zimbabwe will meet you on arrival at the airport in and take you to the volunteer lodge which will be your base for volunteering. This airport services numerous international carriers. Zimbabwe has good connections to destinations throughout Europe, the Asia- Pacific region, USA and Africa.
ORIENTATION
Orientation and Placement will be done the next day. The volunteer guest house will be your base for volunteering while living in Zimbabwe. Generally, your volunteer orientation is an overview of the project’s mission, expectations and introduction to the local community and project site.
PROJECT DETAILS
We currently run the Zimbabwe Sports volunteer project. Every year Go Volunteer Africa carries out HIV/AIDS Football Awareness project – which is organized in partnership with various organizations and stakeholders.
A team of 30 intrepid international and local volunteers sets off on a one month HIV/AIDS awareness football tour. Over the course of the one month, the project team takes part in several HIV awareness events and play many games and also get involved in several activities aimed at spreading the message of prevention of HIV/AIDS through our campaign- “Zip-Up!”
Each event is carried out in collaboration with an established local community based organization in Zimbabwe, ensuring that the event is geared for the specific needs of the local community. The events vary enormously in terms of size and style, with venues ranging from organized local stadium to dirt pitches with no proper goals or markings.
As well as taking part in football matches, the team participating in the Zimbabwe sports volunteer project also take part in HIV awareness seminars and workshops, street parades, cultural evenings and schools visits – all designed to increase people’s awareness and understanding of HIV and AIDS and to challenge people to take positive steps to protect themselves against the disease.
The Zimbabwe sports volunteer project team also distributes leaflets and posters and other materials to help raise AIDS awareness, and also a huge amount of sports equipment – hoping to help local partners to continue to run similar events in the future, and encouraging the local community to take part in the activities.
At the end of the project, the team returns to the base weary and exhausted, but also filled with a considerable sense of achievement. The last week of the month is usually left for volunteers to take a tour or take safari to other parts of the country and they will be getting ready to go back home.
Over the course of the events, the volunteers win a huge number of friends, and are be able to convey vital messages to more than 10,000 people.

VOLUNTEER ACCOMMODATION
Volunteers are provided accommodation in a volunteer house or in a homestay accommodation managed by the local coordinating team. Three meals a day (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) are provided to the participants from Monday – Sunday. The accommodations are neat and clean. Accommodation is shared amongst volunteers on the ‘same gender sharing’ basis rooms. Wifi internet, warm water is not guaranteed.
The homes are close to useful amenities like banks, ATM’s, currency exchanges, restaurants, cafes and shopping places. All placements are around 10 – 30 minutes from the accommodation. At some point volunteers might be on the move and hence we suggest also bringing a sleeping mat and sleeping bag/pillow for travel and weekends away on adventures. Bathrooms are usually shared. There is a lounge area for relaxing, reading, or watching movies.
AGE REQUIREMENT
Our program is for anyone eighteen years and above who loves service above self and social experiences with people from all over the world. We also accepts volunteers of 16+ years of age if they are in a group with a guardian or supervisor above 25years. Volunteers under 16 years old are only considered when accompanied by a parent/guardian. There isn’t a maximum age limit, though a reasonable fitness level is necessary. Families are encouraged to apply and are welcome!
VISAS
Visitors to Zimbabwe must obtain a visa from one of the Zimbabwean diplomatic missions or online unless they come from one of the visa exempt countries or are eligible for visa on arrival. All visitors must hold passports valid for a minimum of 6 months from the arrival date. Foreign citizens may apply for all types of visa (tourism, business, residence and study) online through the eVisa system. Visa fee can be paid online or on arrival. It takes an average of two working days to obtain an e-Visa. However the period may vary due to a number of factors. The e-Visa is valid for three months from the date of issue.
WEEKENDS AND FREE-TIME
Over the weekends or evenings, participants are free to eat out and explore the different delights that Zimbabwe has to offer. We arrange city day tours and long-weekend safaris. No matter what your interests, there is always something for everyone to enjoy! A wide range of leisure activities during your free time complement this unique volunteer experience.
