ZIMBABWE: Teaching Volunteer Project

Zimbabwe teaching volunteer project

Through our Zimbabwe teaching volunteer project, Go Volunteer Africa is looking for volunteers who can take up teaching roles at our schools and children centers in Zimbabwe. You can help in taking normal classes, assisting the teaching staff, conducting extracurricular activities like clay modeling, painting, drawing, singing, art & drama, dancing, group work, games or other similar activities.

Your help and assistance will be greatly appreciated in our schools or children centers and will be a refreshing change to existing curriculum. Volunteers participating in our Zimbabwe teaching volunteer project can do a combination of both teaching and renovation/building work at the project they choose to work at.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Help out in general teaching.
  • Read the stories to the children
  • Paint and color with the children.
  • Teach them English or languages.
  • Have soccer and games programs with children

If you’re a native English or with some teaching experience, you can be a valuable resource in these village classrooms. With your language skills you could teach proper pronunciation and usage. Even if you’ve never formally taught a classroom subject, you can assist the local teachers in their day to day work at the school.

PROJECT LOCATION

Our Zimbabwe volunteer trip starts and ends in Harare the capital and largest city of Zimbabwe. You will be based in Harare. Harare, formerly Salisbury, lying in the northeastern part of the country.

On the edge of landscaped Harare Gardens, the National Gallery of Zimbabwe has a large collection of African contemporary art and traditional pieces like baskets, textiles, jewelry and musical instruments. The unusual granite formation Epworth Balancing Rocks is southeast of the city.

Wildlife such as zebras and giraffes roam Mukuvisi Woodlands, which has bike paths and a bird park. Cycling is amazing for those looking for a form of cardio or aerobic exercise other than running. You will burn plenty of calories just riding a few miles to the supermarket. You’ll burn many more if you get out on some trails. It’s also much easier on your joints than running.

The city is modern and well-planned, with multistoried buildings and tree-lined avenues. It is the site of Anglican and Roman Catholic cathedrals, a Dutch Reformed church, the Queen Victoria Memorial Library and Museum, the National Archives, the University of Zimbabwe (opened 1957), and the Rhodes National Gallery.

ARRIVAL & AIRPORT PICKUP

After you have booked and confirmed your placement, please book your flights to arrive at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare. A member of staff from our local partner organization in Zimbabwe will meet you on arrival at the airport in Harare and take you to the volunteer guest house or host family which will be your base for volunteering. This airport services numerous international carriers. Zimbabwe has good connections to destinations throughout Europe, the Asia- Pacific region, USA and Africa.

ORIENTATION

Orientation and Placement will be done the next day. The volunteer guest house will be your base for volunteering while living in Zimbabwe. Generally, your volunteer orientation is an overview of the project’s mission, expectations and introduction to the local community and project site.

PROJECT DETAILS

The Zimbabwe teaching volunteer project offers an enriching and satisfying experience where the volunteer get the opportunity to teach children who are eager to improve their conversational English skills. The Volunteer will work primarily as an instructor of English in the school. The Volunteer may also be asked to assist in other school activities such as sports and other extra-curricular projects.

The placement consists of teaching the subject of English to school children for 2 to 4 lessons of a day, with each period running for 45 minutes. The volunteers will be required to teach 5 days a week. Saturday and Sunday are days off for the volunteer to enjoy some free time and there are occasional public holidays during the school term. Depending on school size, class numbers vary from 15-60 in a class.

A local teacher will assist you in conducting classes during your first week to address any language barriers or concerns that may arise. You will be asked to run the class once the children become familiar with you. The Volunteer shouldn’t be concerned about what to teach, as all schools in Zimbabwe follow a curriculum that can be implicated in teaching.

However, if one is confident enough, you are more than welcome to apply your own teaching blueprint. If you have additional skills in extra-curricular activities such as: teaching games, music, painting, singing, dancing, yoga, martial arts etc, then you are most welcome to incorporate this into the Zimbabwe teaching volunteer project.

LONGTERM VOLUNTEER WORK

Please contact us for more information about our long-term volunteering program in Zimbabwe. We will guide you on the best times of the year, what to pack, and what extra health precautions to keep in mind and all logistics.

VOLUNTEER ACCOMMODATION

Volunteers are provided accommodation in a volunteer house or in a homestay accommodation managed by the local coordinating team. Three meals a day (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) are provided to the participants from Monday – Sunday. The accommodations are neat and clean. Accommodation is shared amongst volunteers on the ‘same gender sharing’ basis rooms. Wifi internet, warm water is not guaranteed.

The homes are close to useful amenities like banks, ATM’s, currency exchanges, restaurants, cafes and shopping places. All placements are around 10 – 30 minutes from the accommodation. At some point volunteers might be on the move and hence we suggest also bringing a sleeping mat and sleeping bag/pillow for travel and weekends away on adventures. Bathrooms are usually shared. There is a lounge area for relaxing, reading, or watching movies.

AGE REQUIREMENT

Our program is for anyone eighteen years and above who loves service above self and social experiences with people from all over the world. We also accepts volunteers of 16+ years of age if they are in a group with a guardian or supervisor above 25years. Volunteers under 16 years old are only considered when accompanied by a parent/guardian. There isn’t a maximum age limit, though a reasonable fitness level is necessary. Families are encouraged to apply and are welcome!

VISAS

Visitors to Zimbabwe must obtain a visa from one of the Zimbabwean diplomatic missions or online unless they come from one of the visa exempt countries or are eligible for visa on arrival. All visitors must hold passports valid for a minimum of 6 months from the arrival date. Foreign citizens may apply for all types of visa (tourism, business, residence and study) online through the eVisa system. Visa fee can be paid online or on arrival. It takes an average of two working days to obtain an e-Visa. However the period may vary due to a number of factors. The e-Visa is valid for three months from the date of issue.
