ZIMBABWE: Arts Volunteer Project

Through our Zimbabwe Arts volunteer project, you can teach Art, Music, Dance and/or Drama at a local school for orphans and vulnerable children in Zimbabwe. The Arts are an excellent means of communicating and can also be downright fun for the kids! You don’t need any qualifications, just lots of enthusiasm.

Use Arts to address social issues and enable children to express their frustrations and confusions – and perhaps help them to understand and learn to cope with unwelcome situations. Art, Dance, Music or Drama helps teach children life skills, communication and socializing skills. And it’s fun!

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Preparing materials for group meetings
  • Assisting in planning and organizing events
  • Providing structured guidance for performances
  • Supporting the organization in administrative duties
  • Assisting in developing artistic drama and dance pieces
  • Fostering a supportive environment to facilitate growth and development in artistic expression

If art, drama or music is your thing then consider sharing your creative talents on our Zimbabwe arts volunteer project.  This is a great opportunity to learn about music, drama, art and dance in different cultures and languages and be inspired!

PROJECT LOCATION

Our Zimbabwe volunteer trip starts and ends in Victoria Fall town. Victoria Falls is a town in western Zimbabwe and a gateway to the massive waterfall of the same name. Here, the Zambezi River plummets over a cliff and into the Boiling Pot before flowing through a series of gorges. The Devil’s Pool, a natural infinity pool, is on the edge of a sheer drop. Spanning the river is 1905 Victoria Falls Bridge. The surrounding Zambezi National Park is home to white rhinos and elephants.

ARRIVAL & AIRPORT PICKUP

After you have booked and confirmed your placement, please book your flights to arrive at Victoria Falls International Airport. A member of staff from our local partner organization in Zimbabwe will meet you on arrival at the airport in and take you to the volunteer lodge which will be your base for volunteering. This airport services numerous international carriers. Zimbabwe has good connections to destinations throughout Europe, the Asia- Pacific region, USA and Africa.

ORIENTATION

Orientation and Placement will be done the next day. The volunteer guest house will be your base for volunteering while living in Zimbabwe. Generally, your volunteer orientation is an overview of the project’s mission, expectations and introduction to the local community and project site.

PROJECT DETAILS

You could get the class to make posters on the topics you are covering or decorate the classrooms in the school with educational murals covering the alphabet, numbers or even a world map! They will be keen to teach you their songs but also enjoy learning new songs – from old nursery rhymes such as head, shoulders, knees and toes to modern music; add in a dance routine and you will be occupied for hours!

Uganda Arts and Music volunteering project

On this project, volunteers will be based at a local school in Victoria Falls, where they will work with children. You don’t need any specific qualifications or previous experience to get involved but a basic knowledge or interest in drama or dance is needed.

Artistic expression is a universal language and dance and drama are just two variations. Zimbabweans are very creative and this creativity can be channeled into projects like the Dance & Drama program. In the case of children, dance and/or drama can be used as a means of communicating their challenges as well as fostering their personal development.

As a Zimbabwe Arts volunteer, it is important that you are enthusiastic, flexible, open to learning, and eager to work with children and young adults. Anyone who has good organizational skills and experience of managing group dynamics will be a great fit for this project.

The skills and experiences that you will share will have a lifelong impact on the children of the dance and drama group and your support will be greatly appreciated. The group will strengthen the relationships that already exist between the students. The Zimbabwe arts volunteer project also provides an invaluable forum for the development of artistic expression – an interest of many children that is often underrated.

Volunteers will work during school hours, Mondays to Fridays. Please note that this project is unavailable during the school vacation periods. If you would like extra work during the day it is possible to also spend some time on our Zimbabwe Childcare Volunteer project, where you can help look after children in care centre.

You can join the Zimbabwe Arts volunteer project for two or three weeks if you don’t have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the local community and the volunteer.

Volunteer Malawi

Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.

GROUP VOLUNTEER TRIPS

Get some friends together or organize a group from your school and embark on this incredible adventure! Discounts are offered on any group of 5+ participants on Zimbabwe volunteering program.

LONGTERM VOLUNTEER WORK

Please contact us for more information about our long-term volunteering program in Zimbabwe. We will guide you on the best times of the year, what to pack, and what extra health precautions to keep in mind and all logistics.

VOLUNTEER ACCOMMODATION

Volunteers are provided accommodation in a volunteer house or in a homestay accommodation managed by the local coordinating team. Three meals a day (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) are provided to the participants from Monday – Sunday. The accommodations are neat and clean. Accommodation is shared amongst volunteers on the ‘same gender sharing’ basis rooms. Wifi internet, warm water is not guaranteed.

The homes are close to useful amenities like banks, ATM’s, currency exchanges, restaurants, cafes and shopping places. All placements are around 10 – 30 minutes from the accommodation. At some point volunteers might be on the move and hence we suggest also bringing a sleeping mat and sleeping bag/pillow for travel and weekends away on adventures. Bathrooms are usually shared. There is a lounge area for relaxing, reading, or watching movies.

AGE REQUIREMENT

Our program is for anyone eighteen years and above who loves service above self and social experiences with people from all over the world. We also accepts volunteers of 16+ years of age if they are in a group with a guardian or supervisor above 25years. Volunteers under 16 years old are only considered when accompanied by a parent/guardian. There isn’t a maximum age limit, though a reasonable fitness level is necessary. Families are encouraged to apply and are welcome!

VISAS

Visitors to Zimbabwe must obtain a visa from one of the Zimbabwean diplomatic missions or online unless they come from one of the visa exempt countries or are eligible for visa on arrival. All visitors must hold passports valid for a minimum of 6 months from the arrival date. Foreign citizens may apply for all types of visa (tourism, business, residence and study) online through the eVisa system. Visa fee can be paid online or on arrival. It takes an average of two working days to obtain an e-Visa. However the period may vary due to a number of factors. The e-Visa is valid for three months from the date of issue.

WEEKENDS AND FREE-TIME

Over the weekends or evenings, participants are free to eat out and explore the different delights that Zimbabwe has to offer. We arrange city day tours and long-weekend safaris. No matter what your interests, there is always something for everyone to enjoy! A wide range of leisure activities during your free time complement this unique volunteer experience. You can choose from horse riding, bird watching, swim in rivers and waterfalls. A visit to the museum completes you volunteer trip, while you also will enjoy exploring the stunning jungle forests.
