Zanzibar teaching volunteer work is an enjoyable and satisfying experience where the volunteers get the opportunity to teach the students who eager to improve their conversational English skills and other subjects. Volunteers work primarily as instructors of English either in Zanzibari public or private schools. Volunteers may also be asked to assist in other school activities such as sports and other extra-curricular project. 

As a teaching volunteer working with Go Volunteer Africa in Zanzibar, you will be teaching either in public or private schools in rural and urban location. Through Zanzibar teaching volunteer work, you will be teaching English subject to school children for 2 to 4 classes of a day, each period goes for 45 minutes.

Volunteer will be teaching 5 days a week having Saturday and Sunday off and there are some public holidays too. Most of the school children in private school have good command of English but still they may need more practice.

Whereas government school children have moderate or beginners level English knowledge. Depending on school size children’s number in a class from private school could be expected 15 to 25. But in government schools in rural areas there can be more than 50 kids in a class.


By getting involved with Zanzibar teaching volunteer work, you can get an opportunity to get involved with a complete range of teaching and development activities in Zanzibar. If you’re a native English speaker or with some teaching experience, you can be a valuable resource in the classrooms.

With your English skills you could teach proper English pronunciation and usage. We currently have volunteer placements at teaching project in Zanzibar for children of all ages.

In the first week local teacher will assist you to conduct class and solve any language barrier if it appears during teaching. When the children become familiar with you, you will then be able to run class independently. All private and public school have curriculum, you can either follow Tanzania curriculum or you can apply your own skill.

If you have any additional skills in extra curricula activities like teaching games, music, painting, singing, dancing, yoga martial arts etc then you are most welcome and encouraged to apply these skills.
