LESOTHO FAST FACTS

Lesotho, officially the Kingdom of Lesotho, is an enclaved country surrounded by South Africa. It is a mountainous country situated in the Maloti Mountains, and contains the highest mountains in Southern Africa. Lesotho has an area of just over 30,000 km2 (11,600 sq mi) and has a population of about 2 million. Its capital and largest city is Maseru. The official languages are Sesotho and English.

Water Falls in Lesotho

Lesotho was previously the British Crown Colony of Basutoland, but it declared independence from the United Kingdom on 4 October 1966. It is now a fully sovereign state and is a member of the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Nations, the African Union, and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The name Lesotho roughly translates to “land of the Sotho”. By 2021, Lesotho has a 22.8% HIV prevalence rate among people between 15 and 49 years of age, one of the highest worldwide.

PROJECT LOCATION

Maseru is the capital and largest city of Lesotho. It is also the capital of the Maseru District. Located on the Caledon River, Maseru lies directly on the Lesotho-South Africa border. Maseru had a population of 330,760 in the 2016 census. The city was established as a police camp and assigned as the capital after the country became a British protectorate in 1869. When the country achieved independence in 1966, Maseru retained its status as capital. The name of the city is a Sesotho word meaning “red sandstones”

ARRIVAL & AIRPORT PICKUP

After you have booked and confirmed your placement, please book your flights to arrive at Moshoeshoe I International Airport in Maseru. A member of staff from our local partner organization in Lesotho will meet you on arrival at Airport and take you to the volunteer guest house which will be your base for volunteering.  This airport services numerous international carriers. Lesotho has good connections to destinations throughout Europe, the Asia- Pacific region, USA and Africa.

As Lesotho is surrounded by the Republic of South Africa, the road networks are linked, and air services to Maseru connect with international services flying in to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Johannesburg International Airport is the hub of air traffic to all of Southern Africa, including Lesotho. Maseru is just over an hour’s flight from Johannesburg, or four-and-a-half hours’ drive on good tarred roads, primarily highways.

ORIENTATION

Orientation and Placement will be done the next day. Generally, your volunteer orientation is an overview of the project’s mission, expectations and introduction to the local community and project site. Following your arrival in Lesotho you will be given a presentation by the co-coordinating project team to prepare you for the work you will be doing.
