BURUNDI FAST FACTS

Burundi, is a landlocked country in the Great Rift Valley where the African Great Lakes region and East Africa converge. It is bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and southeast, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west; Lake Tanganyika lies along its southwestern border. The capital cities are Gitega and Bujumbura, the latter of which is the country’s largest city.

Burundi remains primarily a rural society, with just 13.4% of the population living in urban areas in 2019. The population density of around 315 people per square kilometer (753 per sq mi) is the second highest in Sub-Saharan Africa. Roughly 85% of the population are of Hutu ethnic origin, 15% are Tutsi, and fewer than 1% are indigenous Twa. The official languages of Burundi are Kirundi, French, and English, Kirundi being recognized officially as the sole national language.

One of the smallest countries in Africa, Burundi’s land is used mostly for subsistence agriculture and grazing, which has led to deforestation, soil erosion and habitat loss. As of 2005, the country was almost completely deforested, with less than 6% of its land covered by trees and over half of that being commercial plantations.

In addition to poverty, Burundi often suffers from corruption, weak infrastructure, poor access to health and education services, and hunger. Burundi is densely populated, and many young people emigrate in search of opportunities elsewhere. The World Happiness Report 2018 ranked the country as the world’s least happy with a rank of 156.

PROJECT LOCATION

Our Burundi volunteer trip starts and ends in Bujumbura city, the former capital of Burundi. You will either be based in Bujumbura or Gitega- the current capital city of Burundi.

Bujumbura: is known for the history of French and Colonial settlements that this city holds. This city has a greater impact of the French culture and you are sure to find the best of French cuisines here. The foods, drinks and the nightlife of the city make up entire Bujumbura. The Living Museum is a place to be in when in Bujumbura.

Gitega: holds the ancient history of the colonial times of Burundi and it preserves its history in the best way. The Gitega national museum has all the artefacts and documents related to the past. There are accommodations for all ranges and budgets and all kinds of people can afford it. People come to this place after a safari or game reserve.

ARRIVAL & AIRPORT PICKUP

After you have booked and confirmed your placement, please book your flights to arrive at Bujumbura International Airport in Bujumbura (former capital of Burundi). A member of staff from our local partner organization in Burundi will meet you on arrival at Airport in Bujumbura. This airport services numerous international carriers. Burundi has good connections to destinations throughout Europe, the Asia- Pacific region, USA and Africa.

ORIENTATION

Orientation and Placement will be done the next day. Generally, your volunteer trip orientation is an overview of the project’s mission, expectations and introduction to the local community and project site. Following your arrival in Burundi you will be given a presentation by the co-coordinating project team to prepare you for the work you will be doing and the adventures.
