The mountainous interior includes Black River Gorges National Park, with rainforests, waterfalls, hiking trails and wildlife like the flying fox. Capital Port Louis has sites such as the Champs de Mars horse track, Eureka plantation house and 18th-century Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens.
Mauritius is located about 2000 kilometres from the east coast of Africa and 6000 kilometres to the west of the Australian city of Perth, Mauritius is situated in the Indian Ocean. Everyone will fall in love with Mauritius and the way it embodies paradise on earth. There are a limited number of volunteer opportunities all over the country and by applying you will get to:
- Experience a luxury destination
- Escape the tourist resorts and do something rewarding
- See and help exotic animals
- Once you see the beaches you won’t want to leave
- Make new friends
- This is one of the most spectacular places to volunteer in Africa
Culturally rich and scenically unsurpassed, the island nation of Mauritius is the ideal setting for an exotic volunteer experience. With its tropical landscape and pristine waters, Mauritius seems designed for holiday seekers but there are lots of rewarding and meaningful ways to experience this island too like volunteering to help wildlife and conservation.
MAURITIUS COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT VOLUNTEERING
There are also community projects where you can help as a classroom assistant supporting children with learning disabilities. Volunteers are also required to assist those with mental and physical disabilities in care homes on the island. Tasks can include teaching English and IT skills to the island’s large Chagos refugee group. Volunteers will usually be based in the island’s capital of Port Louis and these roles would suit those with a responsible and positive nature.
MAURITIUS CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERING
Conservation projects in Mauritius include helping with beach clean ups, renovating buildings and educating local people and tourists. If you are looking to experience nature at its best then take the time to spend time exploring and helping in the Mauritius’ Black River Gorges National Park. This protected reserve accounts for approximately 2% of the island and volunteer trips through the winding jungle roads will bring such rewards as the Alexandra Waterfall at Chamarel and the amazing Seven Coloured Earths sand dunes. The island’s beaches are, of course, a major attraction for international visitors and the white sand Grand Baie beach is one of the most beautiful. Île aux Cerfs should not be missed if you get some free time as the beaches on this little island are the best in the world.
PROTECT DOLPHINS & MARINE WILDLIFE MAURITIUS
There are projects available where you can help protect the island’s dolphin and whale populations. On marine research projects you can work as a marine biology research assistant where you will be involved in data collection as well as monitoring the behavior and population of dolphins, whales and turtles. This role also includes educating the public on conservation and marine mammals as well as helping to change future legislation to ensure cetacean sustainability. Full training will be provided over a two to eight-week involvement with the research project. One organisation we also recommend is the P.A.W.S. wildlife organisation which recruits volunteers to help dogs and cats on the islands.

One sure thing is that you will never get bored when visiting Mauritius, there are so many activities to enjoy. With so much to do and see, it is quite difficult narrowing down the lengthy list of places to visit.
Unlike other countries, Mauritius is a year round destination. This is mainly due to its ideal geographical location. In fact, Mauritius lies just above the tropic of Capricorn, thus relishing from a lot of sunshine throughout the year.
Mauritius has only two season, summer between October and April and winter during the remaining six month. PROJECT LOCATIONS & QUICK FACTS
Mauritius is rightly famed for its sapphire waters, powder-white beaches and luxury resorts. But there’s so much more attraction to Mauritius than the beach, and it's the kind of place that rewards even the smallest attempts at exploration. There’s hiking in the forested and mountainous interior and world-class diving and snorkeling offshore. There are boat trips to near-perfect islets and excursions to botanical gardens and colonial plantation houses.
There are volunteering opportunities meant to support efforts of conservation and community development and our projects are based in Port Louis and other communities at the island. Mauritius is a fabulous culinary destination with great wildlife watching thrown in. And the real Mauritius away from the beach resorts – a hot curry of different cultures and quiet fishing villages – is never far away.
The tiny Indian Ocean Island is situated east of Madagascar, and is twice the size of Hong Kong, but has just one million residents. Once the home of the flightless dodo, now extinct, this tropical island offers moderate temperatures, gentle trade winds and ample sunshine. You’ll also find natural history, bustling markets and vivid festivals.
With so few people, and an abundance of open spaces for recreation, time spent here is truly relaxing, and a unique experience that you can only have off the coast of Africa. Mauritius has a marvelous blend of cultures, welcoming people, a varied cuisine and a huge mix of ethnic communities.
There are activities for every kind of traveller in this natural paradise. Honeymooners often like to soak up the sun on the beach or have a night out at the local bar or tavern. Families are often to be found hiking in the jungle interior, snorkeling in the clear waters or swimming with the dolphins. Backpackers often stop off here on an around-the-world trip. With all the activities available, Mauritius will surely impress even the most cynical visitor.

Visas: A foreign national wishing to enter Mauritius must obtain a visa prior to arrival, unless they are eligible for visa-free entry or eligible to obtain a visa on arrival. A Visa is an official acknowledgement issued by the Immigration Office/ Embassy/ Consular of Mauritius, indicating that your application to enter Mauritius has been reviewed by an Immigration Officer and that the officer has determined you are eligible to enter or transit in Mauritius for a specific purpose.
A Visa, therefore, simply allows the bearer to travel to Mauritius up to a port of entry and does not implicitly guarantee right of admission into Mauritius.
