PROJECT LOCATION:

Tunis is the sprawling capital of Tunisia, a country in North Africa. It sits along Lake Tunis, just inland from the Mediterranean Sea’s Gulf of Tunis. It’s home to a centuries-old medina and the Bardo, an archaeology museum where celebrated Roman mosaics are displayed in a 15th-century palace complex. The park-like ruins of ancient Carthage sit in the city’s northern suburbs.

There are several UNESCO World Heritage sites to visit in Tunisia, including the impressive ancient Roman city of Dougga, Carthage and El Djem. Other highlights include the beautiful blue and white streets of Sidi Bou Said village, visits to the ‘Holy City’ of Kairouan and the major resort of Monastir, and the conserved fortress monasteries of Ribat of Sousse.

ARRIVAL & AIRPORT PICKUP:

After you have booked and confirmed your placement, please book your flights to arrive at Tunis–Carthage International Airport in Tunis city. A member of staff from our local partner organization in Tunisia will meet you on arrival at the airport and take you to the guest house which will be your base for volunteering and touring. This airport services numerous international carriers. Tunisia has good connections to destinations throughout Europe, the Asia- Pacific region, USA and Africa.

ORIENTATION:

Orientation and Placement will be done the next day. The volunteer guest house or host family will be your base for volunteering while living in Tunisia.

PROJECT DETAILS:

Tunisia encompasses beautiful coastlines, stunning Islamic architecture, Berber villages and the fascinating remains of once-bustling Roman cities. With its feet in the Sahara and its head in the Mediterranean, Tunisia covers an impressive diversity of scenic ground.

The capital of Tunis is home to 13th-century medina, the palatial Bardo museum, famous for its spectacular Roman mosaics and Islamic art, and the massive Al-Zaytuna Mosque. To the east is the ancient site of Carthage, one of the great cities of antiquity, where you’ll be able to explore the Antonine baths and unveil the lost city’s story at the Carthage National Museum.

LONGTERM VOLUNTEER WORK

Please contact us for more information about our long-term volunteering opportunities in Tunisia. We will guide you on the best times of the year, what to pack, and what extra health precautions to keep in mind and all logistics.

VOLUNTEER ACCOMMODATION:

For volunteers working with our community development volunteer program in Tunisia, accommodation will be provided in volunteer house which is basic but comfortable. Accommodation can also be organized with a host family for deeper culture immersion experience. At some point volunteers might be on the move and hence we suggest also bringing a sleeping mat and sleeping bag/pillow for travel and weekends away on adventures. Bathrooms are usually shared. There is a lounge area for relaxing, reading, or watching movies.

AGE REQUIREMENT:

Our program is for anyone eighteen years and above who loves service above self and social experiences with people from all over the world. We also accepts volunteers of 16+ years of age if they are in a group with a guardian or supervisor above 25years. Volunteers under 16 years old are only considered when accompanied by a parent/guardian. There isn’t a maximum age limit, though a reasonable fitness level is necessary. Families are encouraged to apply and are welcome!

VISAS:

Visitors to Tunisia must obtain a visa from one of the Tunisian diplomatic missions unless they come from one of the visa exempt countries. All visitors must hold passports valid for a minimum of 6 months from the arrival date. Citizens of Canada and Germany can visit visa-free for up to 4 months. Citizens of Bulgaria can stay up to 2 months without a visa. Citizens of Greece are exempt up to 1 month. According to some sources the citizens of the United States can stay for up to 4 months without a visa, while other sources state that the maximum stay without a visa is 3 months.

INSURANCE:

You’ll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the program. You won’t be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you’re covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave your home to the day you return.

WEEKENDS AND FREE-TIME:

Weekends are free for the volunteer to enjoy their time in Tunisia. In your free time you will have ample opportunity to relax, go for treks and road trips, read or sit around  socializing with the others and reflecting on the day’s activities.
