PROJECT LOCATION:

Our English teaching program in Sudan is based in the capital Khartoum. Khartoum is the capital of Sudan. With a population of 5,274,321, its metropolitan area is the largest in Sudan, the sixth-largest in Africa, the second-largest in North Africa, and the fourth-largest in the Arab world.

Khartoum is located at the confluence of the White Nile, flowing north from Lake Victoria, and the Blue Nile, flowing west from Lake Tana in Ethiopia. The location where the two Niles meet is known as al-Mogran or al-Muqran. From there, the Nile continues to flow north towards Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea. Divided by these two parts of the Nile, Khartoum is a tripartite metropolis consisting of Khartoum proper, and linked by bridges to Khartoum North and Omdurman to the west.

ARRIVAL & AIRPORT PICKUP:

After you have booked and confirmed your placement, please book your flights to arrive at Khartoum International Airport in Khartoum city. A member of staff from our local partner organization in Sudan will meet you on arrival at the airport and take you to the volunteer guest house which will be your base for volunteering. These airport services numerous international carriers. Sudan has good connections to destinations throughout Europe, the Asia- Pacific region, USA and Africa.

ORIENTATION:

Orientation and Placement will be done the next day. The volunteer guest house will be your base for volunteering while living in Sudan. Generally, your volunteer orientation is an overview of the project’s mission, expectations and introduction to the local community and project site.

PROJECT DETAILS:

English is one of two national languages in Sudan but many Sudanese learn English only in school. This situation puts children from deprived families at a disadvantage because the schools they attend are mostly resource poor and the teachers are not well trained or experienced.

Go Volunteer Africa’s English Teaching Volunteer Program in Sudan, offers you an opportunity to volunteer in local schools  and colleges in Sudan. Volunteers mainly teach children aged between 10- 17years. Typical subjects taught include English (Conversational and Written) and General Knowledge.

Our English teaching program in Sudan achieves the dual goal of aiding local schools in Khartoum, that have poor infrastructure and resources, and to help underprivileged children to get support with their education. The Sudan English teaching volunteer project builds up children’s understanding of English by alternative teaching techniques, giving them resources and support and thus developing confidence and making them enjoy education rather than fearing it.

As a volunteer in English teaching project, you will work in deprived children community schools consisting both boys and girls. Along with English lessons, you may teach other skills like computers and arts.  We hope that with the skills and motivation volunteers give them, students pursue higher education and get well paid jobs that often require English language skills.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

Prior experience in teaching English is desired but not required. You’ll need to have sound communication skills in English. Volunteers should also be flexible, self-motivated and have a strong willingness to learn and take new initiatives.
