Dakar is the capital of Senegal, in West Africa. It’s an Atlantic port on the Cap-Vert peninsula. Its traditional Médina quarter is home to the Grande Mosquée, marked by a towering minaret. The Musée Théodore Monod displays cultural artifacts including clothing, drums, carvings and tools. The city’s vibrant nightlife is inspired by the local mbalax music.

Dakar’s climate is generally warm. Dakar has an ocean-influenced hot semi-arid climate, with a short rainy season and a lengthy dry season. Dakar’s rainy season lasts from July to October while the dry season covers the remaining eight months.

After you have booked and confirmed your placement, please book your flights to arrive at Blaise Diagne International Airport in Diass. A member of staff from our local partner organization in Senegal will meet you on arrival at Airport and take you to the volunteer guest house or host family which will be your base for volunteering. This airport services numerous international carriers. Senegal has good connections to destinations throughout Europe, the Asia- Pacific region, USA and Africa.

Orientation and Placement will be done the next day. Generally, your volunteer orientation is an overview of the project’s mission, expectations and introduction to the local community and project site. Following your arrival in Senegal you will be given a presentation by the co-coordinating project team to prepare you for the work you will be doing.

Go Volunteer Africa’ Senegal community development volunteer program has been formulated by our team, to give our volunteer participants the most meaningful of experiences, wherever they may decide to venture. We take pride in all of our volunteer projects in Senegal and wish to ensure that our volunteers will benefit the community in a favorable way while on their once in a life time journey.

Senegal community volunteer program offers participants an opportunity to work in childcare centers, schools, hospitals, sports projects and conservation projects from 1 week to 24 weeks in duration.

In some locations especially rural areas the education system has room for improvement and foreign native English speakers are needed all year round. This is a beautiful country to experience as an English teacher and you will find local people and children extremely friendly. On these placements you will get to lead English lessons to classrooms and also individuals, whilst also getting involved with other lessons and activities. Projects can be joined at youth centres, in schools and also you could be placed to help refugees.

Senegal has a population of around 15.8 million people and nearly half of the Senegalese population – 46.7 percent, to be exact – is living in poverty, you can make a difference and help disadvantaged people. Even though Senegal is a developed country by African standards with a booming tourist industry there are still areas which are underdeveloped and you can help improve infrastructure and facilities for local people. You can also help with sustainable living projects, help conserve nature in the rainforest, work in a medical capacity, help train local people providing them with new skills or work as a cook at children’s centres.

Marine Conservation Projects in Senegal

With the help of international volunteers animals in Senegal can be protected and helped back into the wild through research and conservation programs. There are also educational volunteer projects with focus on education and community development. We have programs where you can learn to scuba dive and help marine wildlife and conservation efforts. You will get to live and work in spectacular settings on the coast either on or close to the beach. Full training and support are provided.

We will match your skills and expectations with those of your host project to ensure your placement is a professionally, as well as a personally, rewarding experience. No qualifications necessary, other than the ability to speak English or French.

Volunteers are provided accommodation in a volunteer house or in a homestay accommodation managed by the local coordinating team. Three meals a day (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) are provided to the participants from Monday – Sunday. The accommodations are neat and clean. Accommodation is shared amongst volunteers on the ‘same gender sharing’ basis rooms. Wifi internet, warm water is not guaranteed.

The homes are close to useful amenities like banks, ATM’s, currency exchanges, restaurants, cafes and shopping places. All placements are around 10 – 30 minutes from the accommodation. At some point volunteers might be on the move and hence we suggest also bringing a sleeping mat and sleeping bag/pillow for travel and weekends away on adventures. Bathrooms are usually shared. There is a lounge area for relaxing, reading, or watching movies.

Our program is for anyone eighteen years and above who loves service above self and social experiences with people from all over the world. We also accepts volunteers of 16+ years of age if they are in a group with a guardian or supervisor above 25years. Volunteers under 16 years old are only considered when accompanied by a parent/guardian. There isn’t a maximum age limit, though a reasonable fitness level is necessary. Families are encouraged to apply and are welcome!
