SENEGAL: Childcare Volunteer Project

Senegal Childcare volunteer project
Senegal Childcare volunteer project

Sometimes, it can be difficult for volunteers to evaluate their own impact, but at our Senegal Childcare volunteer project the equations are simple. Success is measured in books read, smiles made, and games played. As a childcare volunteer in Senegal you help out at children’s centres and pre-schools in a number of activities.

Share you love, care and compassion with the disadvantaged and orphaned children in Senegal. Go Volunteer Africa’s Senegal Childcare volunteer project focuses on helping children who have either been abandoned, abused, or facing extreme adversity and personal risks. Many of these children are either living in the streets or in an orphanage. The idea behind this project is to facilitate a healthier environment and lifestyle for the children.

PROJECTS HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Help with breakfast and prepare the children for school
  • Assist with lessons and teach English 3-4 hours a day in the local school
  • Lead sports, art, games, picture books, music activities
  • Organize fun activities when the children return from school
  • Prepare food for dinner

Volunteers will be working as a support system to care for, nurture, and play with the children. Volunteers will be offering love, compassion, and education. You will be working directly with the children in a number of activities, to help them lead a better life and reach their full potential.

PROJECT LOCATION:

Dakar is the capital of Senegal, in West Africa. It’s an Atlantic port on the Cap-Vert peninsula. Its traditional Médina quarter is home to the Grande Mosquée, marked by a towering minaret. The Musée Théodore Monod displays cultural artifacts including clothing, drums, carvings and tools. The city’s vibrant nightlife is inspired by the local mbalax music.

Dakar’s climate is generally warm. Dakar has an ocean-influenced hot semi-arid climate, with a short rainy season and a lengthy dry season. Dakar’s rainy season lasts from July to October while the dry season covers the remaining eight months.

ARRIVAL & AIRPORT PICKUP:

After you have booked and confirmed your placement, please book your flights to arrive at Blaise Diagne International Airport in Diass. A member of staff from our local partner organization in Senegal will meet you on arrival at Airport and take you to the volunteer guest house or host family which will be your base for volunteering. This airport services numerous international carriers. Senegal has good connections to destinations throughout Europe, the Asia- Pacific region, USA and Africa.

ORIENTATION:

Orientation and Placement will be done the next day. Generally, your volunteer orientation is an overview of the project’s mission, expectations and introduction to the local community and project site. Following your arrival in Senegal you will be given a presentation by the co-coordinating project team to prepare you for the work you will be doing.

PROJECT DETAILS:

The stakes are high for the local team that supports these children, and your ability to share your native tongue (French and English), play some games and help with homework is important to these kids and the places where they live. Easily one of the most profound experiences in the mix, volunteering with children in need puts you on the front-lines of one of Senegal’s most pressing concerns.

Participate in our Senegal Childcare volunteer project and help with the provision of child support to disadvantaged children as well as participating in a range of exciting activities essential to child development. Senegal Childcare volunteer project helps develop the cognitive, academic, emotional and social skills of children from impoverished families by assisting local educators and caretakers with their daily activities.

Volunteer in Senegal and contribute to making a difference in children’s lives as well as gaining a much better understanding of some of the fascinating aspects of Senegalese culture. As a volunteer in Senegal, you may be placed in a school, daycare centres, special support home for children with learning disabilities depending on your interests and skills.

Volunteers in Senegal follow a timetable arranged by the centre but are welcome to contribute their ideas especially new games, songs and rhymes to help to create fun educational activities for these children. As a volunteer, your activities will vary depending on your skills and the needs in the location of your project at your particular time of volunteering. Duties will be fully assigned to you when you arrive on the project.

LONGTERM VOLUNTEER WORK:

Please contact us for more information about our long-term volunteer work in Senegal. We will guide you on the best times of the year, what to pack, and what extra health precautions to keep in mind and all logistics.

VOLUNTEER ACCOMMODATION:

Volunteers are provided accommodation in a volunteer house or in a homestay accommodation managed by the local coordinating team. Three meals a day (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) are provided to the participants from Monday – Sunday. The accommodations are neat and clean. Accommodation is shared amongst volunteers on the ‘same gender sharing’ basis rooms. Wifi internet, warm water is not guaranteed.

The homes are close to useful amenities like banks, ATM’s, currency exchanges, restaurants, cafes and shopping places. All placements are around 10 – 30 minutes from the accommodation. At some point volunteers might be on the move and hence we suggest also bringing a sleeping mat and sleeping bag/pillow for travel and weekends away on adventures. Bathrooms are usually shared. There is a lounge area for relaxing, reading, or watching movies.

AGE REQUIREMENT:

Our program is for anyone eighteen years and above who loves service above self and social experiences with people from all over the world. We also accepts volunteers of 16+ years of age if they are in a group with a guardian or supervisor above 25years. Volunteers under 16 years old are only considered when accompanied by a parent/guardian. There isn’t a maximum age limit, though a reasonable fitness level is necessary. Families are encouraged to apply and are welcome!
