LIBERIA: Medical Volunteer Project

Liberia Medical Volunteer Project

Our Liberia medical volunteer project is open all year-round. Students and professionals are highly welcome! This Go Volunteer Africa project offers a wide range of medical volunteer placements including nursing, physical therapy, midwifery, dentistry, pediatrics and surgery.

Even before the Ebola epidemic ravaged Liberia in 2014, Liberians faced serious challenges in getting medical care. A civil war that ended in the early 2000s weakened health services and created a deep mistrust in the health system among Liberians. After the Ebola crisis it was much worse — people saw health facilities as places where family and friends went to die.

  • Taking rounds of the wards, maintaining files
  • Getting actively involved in the daily work of the hospital
  • Shadowing professionals medics and assist whenever needed.
  • Assist patients (getting them from one service point to another)
  • Treating minor injuries, vaccinations etc. (depending on skills)
  • Doing routine patient checkups like measure Blood pressure, pulse, check fever etc.

Go Volunteer Africa is supporting the healthcare system of Liberia in hard-to-reach places and outer city health centers. Mothers and children in remote areas suffer the most as they struggle to reach life-saving medical care. One-third of children in Liberia are chronically malnourished, making them even more susceptible to disease.

Zwedru is the capital of Grand Gedeh County, one of the 15 counties in Liberia. Zwedru is located in Tchien District of Grand Gedeh County, near the Cavalla River in the country’s south-eastern region and near the border with Côte d’Ivoire. It is located 350 miles southeast from the capital city of Monrovia.

The town gets its name after the head of a local anteater creek. Zwedru is surrounded by a lot of forests, and lies in a tropical region. The north-western section of Zwedru has an important forest region with rare bird species. Zwedru was known for timber production and its wood products industry.

Volunteering Liberia

After you have booked and confirmed your placement, please book your flights to arrive at Roberts International Airport in Monrovia. A member of staff from our local partner organization in Liberia will meet you on arrival at Airport and take you to the volunteer guest house or host family which will be your base for volunteering. This airport services numerous international carriers. Liberia has good connections to destinations throughout Europe, the Asia- Pacific region, USA and Africa.

Orientation and Placement will be done the next day. Generally, your volunteer orientation is an overview of the project’s mission, expectations and introduction to the local community and project site. Following your arrival in Liberia you will be given a presentation by the co-coordinating project team to prepare you for the work you will be doing.

In an increasingly globalized world, achieving health for all has become incredibly complex. Health outcomes are no longer determined only by a country’s policies — but also by global health institutions and changing environmental factors. As such, volunteers play an important and necessary role in shaping global health.

Whatever your motivations, you should remember that health and medical volunteering abroad more especially in Africa is not as simple as “lending a hand” in a community. It is very likely that — due to staffing and resource shortages in low-resource countries — medical and health volunteers will step into vital roles that have a real-world impact for community members.

Eswatini Elderly Care Volunteer Project

As a physician or nurse, you’ve already dedicated your life in service to others. You’ve used your skills and expertise to heal and treat patients to the best of your ability. Whether you’re in a chaotic trauma unit, or a family practice, you’re the type of person who always answers the call to help.

Joining our Liberia medical volunteer project is a thrilling experience way for you to do something different by stepping away from your typical environment. It can also help you inject more purpose into your professional life if you’re feeling disconnected or burned out.

Malawi medical volunteer project

From general medical care to specialized areas like dentistry, trained medical personnel are always needed in Liberia, all year round. You might be working full time in a local hospital or accompany healthcare practitioners with their daily door-to-door assessments in the community.

Volunteers interested in preventing illnesses or understanding complex health outcomes can choose to work with public health practitioners. Tasks such as large-scale data collection through surveys and interviews and the distribution of tools like mosquito nets are powerful strategies used in effective preventative health measures.

Volunteers are provided accommodation in a volunteer house or in a homestay accommodation managed by the local coordinating team. Three meals a day (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) are provided to the participants from Monday – Sunday. The accommodations are neat and clean. Accommodation is shared amongst volunteers on the ‘same gender sharing’ basis rooms. Wifi internet, warm water is not guaranteed.

The homes are close to useful amenities like banks, ATM’s, currency exchanges, restaurants, cafes and shopping places. All placements are around 10 – 30 minutes from the accommodation. At some point volunteers might be on the move and hence we suggest also bringing a sleeping mat and sleeping bag/pillow for travel and weekends away on adventures. Bathrooms are usually shared. There is a lounge area for relaxing, reading, or watching movies.

Our program is for anyone eighteen years and above who loves service above self and social experiences with people from all over the world. We also accepts volunteers of 16+ years of age if they are in a group with a guardian or supervisor above 25years. Volunteers under 16 years old are only considered when accompanied by a parent/guardian. There isn’t a maximum age limit, though a reasonable fitness level is necessary. Families are encouraged to apply and are welcome!

Family Volunteer Abroad Programs

Visitors to Liberia must obtain a visa from one of the Liberian diplomatic missions unless they come from one of the visa exempt countries. Yellow fever vaccination is required. A broader visa on arrival for tourists was announced in January 2019.

Over the weekends or evenings, participants are free to eat out and explore the different delights that Liberia has to offer. We arrange city day tours and long-weekend safaris. No matter what your interests, there is always something for everyone to enjoy!
