PROJECT LOCATION:

Gaborone is the capital and largest city of Botswana with a population of 231,626 based on the 2011 census, about 10% of the total population of Botswana. Gaborone City is situated between Kgale Hill and Oodi Hill, near the confluence of the Notwane River and Segoditshane River in the south-eastern corner of Botswana, 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) from the South African border.

It’s known for the Gaborone Game Reserve, sheltering native animals like wildebeest and impala, plus resident and migratory birds. To the city’s southwest, rhinos and giraffes inhabit the Mokolodi Nature Reserve. Footpaths lead to city views at the summit of Kgale Hill. In the city center, the National Museum and Art Gallery displays art and cultural artifacts.

ARRIVAL & AIRPORT PICKUP:

After you have booked and confirmed your placement, please book your flights to arrive at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport in Gaborone City. A member of staff from our local partner organization from Gaborone will meet you on arrival at Airport and take you to the volunteer guest house or host family which will be your base for volunteering. This airport services numerous international carriers. Botswana has good connections to destinations throughout Europe, the Asia- Pacific region, USA and Africa.

ORIENTATION:

Orientation and Placement will be done the next day. Generally, your volunteer orientation is an overview of the project’s mission, expectations and introduction to the local community and project site. Following your arrival in Botswana you will be given a presentation by the co-coordinating project team to prepare you for the work you will be doing.

PROJECT DETAILS:

The minimum required time for teaching volunteer projects in Botswana is four weeks and volunteers must participate in this Botswana teaching volunteer program with an open mind, giving heart, and flexibility to work with different age ranges of children.

Your help and assistance will be greatly appreciated in this rural school and will be a refreshing change to existing curriculum. Volunteers can take up projects depending on the needs of the school. Volunteers can do a combination of both teaching and renovation/building work in Botswana. If you’re a native English speaker or with some teaching experience, you can be a valuable resource in the classrooms.

With your English skills you could teach proper English pronunciation and usage. Even if you’ve never formally taught a classroom subject, you can assist the local teachers in their day to day work at the school. You don’t need to know the local language, or the methods of the local school system. All you need is enthusiasm and a desire to share your knowledge and make a difference.

We take care of all the logistical details including airport transfers, accommodation, feeding and all the ground support. Teaching volunteer work with Go Volunteer Africa offers the opportunity to serve the community in need through sharing your knowledge and skills. Learning about the proper use of synonyms starting  at young age is very important

Education is the key to a child’s success in Africa. Education is a priority,  it is one of the most important tools Go Volunteer Africa can give the children of Africa in order to break the cycle of poverty affecting their lives and to help them become independent adults.

VOLUNTEER ACCOMMODATION:

Volunteers are provided accommodation in a volunteer house or in a homestay accommodation managed by the local coordinating team. Accommodation is shared amongst volunteers on the ‘same gender sharing’ basis rooms. Wifi internet, warm water is not guaranteed.

The homes are close to useful amenities like banks, ATM’s, currency exchanges, restaurants, cafes and shopping places. All placements are around 10 – 30 minutes from the accommodation.
