Our Botswana medical volunteering program is open to pre-health student (pre med, pre dental, pre veterinarian) or aspiring medical professional looking to enhance their skill set and/or gain experience in Africa through a healthcare system. Your exact role within the hospital or clinic will be determined by your level of medical experience as well as by the enthusiasm and effort which you show to the local staff.
- Shadowing professionals medics and assist whenever needed.
- Assist patients (getting them from one service point to another)
- Treating minor injuries, vaccinations etc. (depending on skills)
- Getting actively involved in the daily work of the hospital, taking rounds of the wards, maintaining files, and doing routine patient checkups like measure Blood pressure, pulse, check fever etc.
Pre-university interns usually start by observing the doctors and nurses. You may find more practical opportunities arise once you get to know the local staff and if you can demonstrate a good understanding of local medical conditions.
Gaborone is the capital city of Botswana. It’s known for the Gaborone Game Reserve, sheltering native animals like wildebeest and impala, plus resident and migratory birds. To the city’s southwest, rhinos and giraffes inhabit the Mokolodi Nature Reserve. Footpaths lead to city views at the summit of Kgale Hill. In the city center, the National Museum and Art Gallery displays art and cultural artifacts.
ARRIVAL & AIRPORT PICKUP:
After you have booked and confirmed your placement, please book your flights to arrive at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport in Gaborone City. A member of staff from our local partner organization from Gaborone will meet you on arrival at Airport. This airport services numerous international carriers. Botswana has good connections to destinations throughout Europe, the Asia- Pacific region, USA and Africa.
Orientation and Placement will be done the next day. The volunteer guest house or host family will be your base for volunteering while living in Botswana.
We offer short and long term medical volunteering placements in hospitals, clinics, outreach centres and slum community projects in Gaborone and other communities across Botswana.
Placements are available in areas of Dentistry, HIV & AIDS, Medicine, Midwifery, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Radiography and Veterinary.
Botswana is one of the countries most affected by HIV/AIDS and malaria. Our Botswana medical volunteering Project aims to address some of the above mentioned issues at a local level through education, awareness and improved access to primary and palliative health care and treatment.
If you want to help treat people suffering from this terrible disease and spread awareness to one day defeat the disease for good, you are welcome to Botswana. Go Volunteer Africa works in collaboration with local organizations running various HIV/AIDS projects promoting awareness and providing comfort to patients. In this HIV/ AIDS Botswana volunteering opportunity you will perform a variety of tasks including stigma reduction, home visits, counselling as well as help to train local people who then return to their villages and apply their newfound knowledge. This grassroots approach spreads awareness more effectively, and the value of your contribution will multiply as time goes on.
By lending your time and skills as a volunteer in Botswana for one of the affordable, reputable HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment programs, you can have a hand in ending this crisis. No specific qualifications required. Volunteers should be compassionate towards people infected and affected with HIV/AIDS virus. Volunteers must be 18 and should be open-minded, resourceful, flexible and patient.
