Incredible 15 Days of full Volunteering experience and thrilling Nairobi total experience begins and ends from Nairobi. GVA Holidays will arrange a pickup for you, from the airport, hotel or guesthouse at agreed time. Our experienced Coordinator will give an orientation about Go Volunteer Africa‘s work in Kenya and the volunteering project you will be working on. (It’s always better to arrive a day earlier for the best experience and allowing you sometime to rest, if not yet in Nairobi.)
Day 1-12: Nairobi – Volunteering
Volunteering Nairobi experience starts with a visit and tour of the project site and introduction to the staff. During the orientation you have an opportunity of choosing volunteer project of interest from our diverse assortment of healthcare, Arts and Music, Sports Coaching, Orphanage Care, Slum Project, and socio-economic projects. You will use your talents and skills to enhance the lives of orphans, under privileged women and youth while learning about the culture and customs of the local Kenyan people.
You will be engaged with an on-going volunteer program in need of a helping hand. You can spend the first day helping to paint the classroom blocks, work with teachers, prepare meals for orphans, train a dance, musical instruments, and work with clinical officers or participate in the youth empowerment projects. You will spend 12 full days volunteering in Nairobi.
Day 13: Nairobi City Tour & Giraffe Centre, Karen Blixen Excursion, Bomas of Kenya
This low cost tour will take you to the various Landmark Buildings, Uhuru Park (Freedom Park), City Center and Shopping areas, National Museum, Snake Park and the Railway Museum.
After a great city exposure, we shall take you to the Nairobi Giraffe Center which is only 15kms from the City and was founded in 1978 to save the endangered Rothschild Giraffe. This is the only place where you can go as near as feeding the Giraffe from your palm. On the adjacent is Karen Blixen Museum, the farm house where the Author of the book “Out of Africa” lived. It is also the same place where the famous movie “Out of Africa” was shot.
You will wine away the evening at the Bomas of Kenya. A Boma means a village, thus Bomas of Kenya means literally villages of Kenya. Kenya is a tribal society with over 42 tribes. This homestead depicts different cultures with Guides to tell the history. Next to it, visit to the auditorium where you will be entertained by different tribal cultural troops.
Day 14: Mount Longonot Trek Day Tour (optional)
(Mt Longonot National Park is located 90km from Nairobi city on the floor of the Great Rift Valley. The mt Longonot national park is a popular park for hiking and mountain climbing that takes less than 3-4hrs to climb/hike up and down. It is one of the best adventure day trips from Nairobi. Longonot national park is easy to get to and has the best sightseeing opportunities and one can look inside the mountain crater. Nairobi- Great African Rift Valley- Mt Longonot Depart Nairobi with picnic lunch boxes for Mt Longonot National Park going through the Kikuyu lush green highlands and then on the eastern escarpment of the rift valley system.
You will make a scheduled brief stop at the view point on the side of the escarpment to enjoy the view of the Rift valley floor from a birds eye view. The rift valley system was formed 5 million years ago and the rift runs from the red sea through Ethiopia and Kenya and Tanzania. The rift valley is an active volcanic area and has some of the most interesting features including more than 8 lakes, dormant and active volcanic mountains and hotsprings and geysers like the Olkaria geothermal wells and Lake Bogoria geysers. You can actually see the volcanic Mt Suswa and Mt Longonot from this high place with their evergreen craters and the undulating green rift valley floor. The view from here is just amazing. Make sure to take as many photos from here as you can.
Drop into the rift valley and arrive at the Mt Longonot national park for your Hike up to the crater. The hike requires medium physical fitness and you will climb through the gulleys that dot the sides of this mountain. You will have a guide and you can make some rest stops at the designated places on the trek. You will get to the rim of the crater and look into the awesome crater below. If you have the strength for it, you can trek round the rim of the crater.
Picnic lunch will be at a convenient place then descend from the Longonot Mountain for the base at the park headquarters for onward return journey by road to Nairobi arriving in the evening to end your full day hiking excursion of Mt Longonot
Day 15 Nairobi National Park Day Tour
Nairobi is the only City in the whole World that boast of a National Park next to its door step. Nairobi National Park is 15kms away from the City Centre and despite this proximity, there are many species of mammals including 4 of the Big Five. The best time to visit the park is early in the morning or late afternoon everyday.
