11 days trip to the incredible country of Tunisia. This will be the trip of a lifetime for anyone who wants to be totally immersed in the experience of traveling with a purpose in northern Africa. We will be both experiencing culture through Tunisia tours and also making a difference by getting involved in community volunteering in Tunisia.
This Tunisia tour begins and ends in Tunis – capital of Tunisia, where participants are to arrive by 6th or 20th Oct 2019 (choose your perfect date). WHAT'S NOT INCLUDED:
Flights: Flights are not included in our program costs. However, GVA has partnered with an experienced and professional team of travel experts to help our volunteer travelers find the best flight deals for their trips with us. This travel specialist operates in the tailor-made, long haul multi-stop travel market, arranging complex airfares and transfers for independent travelers.
Visas and Work Permits: The Republic of Tunisia, allows citizens of all African countries to obtain a visa on arrival. Citizens of most other countries are urged to obtain a visa prior to entry to Tunisia to avoid any possible inconvenience at point of entry in Tunisia. Volunteers need a Tourist Visa to enter Tunisia; you can get it at the airport. All visitors must hold a passport valid for at least six months with at least one empty page.
Insurance: You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the program. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave your home to the day you return.
Day 1 Tunis – Arrival
Go Volunteer Africa will arrange a pickup for you, from the airport at agreed time. Our experienced Coordinator will give an orientation about Go Volunteer Africa and the project you will be working on. From here you will visit and tour the project site and be introduced to the staff. During the orientation you can choose from our diverse assortment of health, environment and socio-economic projects collaborating with local African partner NGOs.
Day 2 - 4: Volunteering in Tunis / Surrounding areas/ medina tour
You can use your talents and skills to enhance the lives of less privileged children, under privileged women and youth while learning about the culture and customs of the local people. You will surely be assisting with on-going programs in need of a helping hand. You can spend the first day helping to paint the classroom blocks, work with teachers, prepare meals for children, plant trees, train dance, musical instruments, and work with clinical officers or participate in the youth empowerment projects.
You will always have an opportunity to tour the old medina (ancient city) of Tunis. From the charming architecture to the picturesque souks (markets), the ancient medina is well worth your exploration.
Day 5 Bardo Museum / Carthage / Sidi Bou Said
After breakfast, you will set out to visit the Bardo National Museum. The Bardo Museum contains some the most complete and ancient Roman Mosaics in the entire world. From the museum, you will head off to explore the famous ruins of Carthage. Your counterpart will take you to the Phoenician Cemetery, Antonin’s Bath, Punic Harbors, the Carthage Museum and more. Depending on the time, you will take a drive up to the beautiful Sidi Bou Said, which overlooks the Gulf of Tunis.
Day 6 Dougga / Bulla Regia / El Kef
After breakfast, you will move on to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dougga. Some people have called Dougga one of Tunisia’s best Roman historical sites. From here, you will head off to explore Bulla Regia! This archaeological site has a wonderful display of Roman mosaics and semi-underground housing. Continue to El Kef for night.
Day 7 El Kef / Makthar / Sbeitla / Kairouan
After breakfast, you will set off to explore the Roman site of Makthar. Scattered with temples, arches and amphitheaters, Makthar allows for a glimpse into the Roman life. Next you head off to Sbeitla, another of Tunisia’s ancient Roman sites. Continue to the spiritual capital of Tunisia, Kairouan.
Day 8 Kairouan / El Jem / Sousse
After an early breakfast, you will visit the amazing mosque of Sidi Okba, the ancient medina, and Aghlabid pool. Continue to the magnificent coliseum of El Jem. Perhaps Tunisia’s most spectacular site, El Jem is a must see attraction. Stop for a minute to imagine life in the gladiator times while discovering the history of El Jem. Your final destination will be the coastal city of Sousse.
Day 9 Sousse – Sousse Medina
After breakfast you will have a free day to either relax in Sousse or take an excursion to one of the surrounding areas. Sousse was founded in 800 BC, so there is plenty of history to been seen in this ancient city. The Great Mosque, the archeological museum and the “Good Shepherd” catacombs all tell a story of Sousse’s ancient past.
Day 10 Nabeul / Kerkouane / Haouaria / Tunis
After a relaxed breakfast, we head north through the Cap Bon peninsula. Your trip will take you through the coastal town of Nabeul which is Tunisia’s pottery capital. On to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kerkouane which boasts some of the best preserved ruins of the Punic era. Haouaria is situated at the tip of the peninsula and boasts a majestic coastline. The end of the day takes you back to Tunis.
Day 11 Relax in Tunis/ Drive to airport/ Depart Tunis
Ready to go home - After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for departure.
