This journey begins in Kigali where volunteer travelers are to arrive a day before the start of the trip (we can accommodate, if need be). Volunteers spend most of their time in Kigali.

Kigali is a beautiful green city in the heart of the tiny nation of Rwanda. This is where you will be spending the most of your time. The people of this small city are some of the friendliest in the world. You will stay with a local family or live at the volunteer house and eat home cooked meals while experiencing local life there every day. You will travel daily through the beautiful neighborhood and share in local customs in many homes all while contributing to meaningful community development projects.

You will be involved in a wide range of projects, depending on your skills and interests. Volunteers will be working alongside a local team to ensure positive results of the project. Volunteers are stationed in walkable distances from accommodation to project worksite.

Our favorite thing at Go Volunteer Africa is being spontaneous and we love all the unplanned surprises we constantly come across during out travels. We provide a very free flowing schedule that also allows free time to spend doing whatever you’d like.

The objective of this unique volunteer travel adventure trip is to help more people gain the life changing, life affirming experiences that volunteering can give while experiencing the best Rwanda can offer. Throughout this entire trip, the goal is to make a positive impact on the local people while getting off the grid and experiencing local culture.

Day 1: Go Volunteer Africa will arrange a pickup for you, from the airport, hotel or guesthouse, at agreed time. Our experienced Coordinator will give an orientation about Go Volunteer Africa and the project you will be working on. (It’s always better to arrive a day earlier for the best experience and allowing you sometime to rest, if not yet in Kigali.) From here you will visit and tour the project site and be introduced to the staff. During the orientation you can choose from our diverse assortment of health, environment and socio-economic projects collaborating with local African partner NGOs.

Day 2 - 9:  You can use your talents and skills to enhance the lives of less priviledged children, under privileged women and youth while learning about the culture and customs of the local Rwandese people. You will surely be assisting with on-going programs in need of a helping hand. You can spend the first day helping to paint the classroom blocks, work with teachers, prepare meals for children, plant trees, train dance, musical instruments, and work with clinical officers or participate in the youth empowerment projects.

Day 11: Kigali city tour

Kigali is a city filled with attractions from museums, art galleries, to cultural and historical sites. Go Volunteer Africa will offer you a life time opportunity to fully explore Kigali on a one day trip offering you the opportunity to see the City and discover Kigali's beauty and history. The journey will take you to the top of Mt. Kigali for views of the city and the countryside, a milk bar, a neighborhood market,  the best coffee around, the presidential palace and ends at the Kigali Genocide Memorial.

Day 12: Akagera national park safari

This is a one day safari which will give you a classic safari experience in Rwanda. Akagera national park is located in Eastern Rwanda on the border with Tanzania. Akagera national park is the only Savannah park in Rwanda and is home to several mammal species including Lions, Elephants, Giraffes, Hippos, Kobs, Zebras, Bushbucks, Waterbucks and most recently Black Rhinos have been introduces from South Africa, making Akagera national park officially a big 5 park like it was many years ago. It is also home to numerous bird species in the several habitats which include woodland, swamps, lakes and Savannah.

The trip will start at 5am and the park is 2.5 hours away from Kigali city. The game drive can last about 4-6 hours depending on the animal sightings and interest.

Day 13: Gorilla tracking (optional)

On the 13th day of the trip, we have an optional gorilla trekking safari for anyone interested in spending time with these rare creatures. If you are not doing this safari, we always have a package for you in store.

Volcanoes national park Rwanda is situated 2-3 hours’ drive from Kigali city, and pre gorilla trekking briefing takes place at 7:30am and it’s a must for tourists going to track gorillas to be present for this session. If you miss briefing, you cannot go ahead and trek gorillas. Therefore once planning to go for trek, it’s very necessary for you to have the above information at the back of your mind.

This safari experience starts as early as 4:00am and all participants should  be ready by then. After briefing on the dos and don’ts of trekking for gorillas, you have a chance to choose a gorilla group to trek, choosing from Easy trek, Medium and hard. For a one day gorilla excursion, since you have to return to Kigali that same day for departure, its best to go for an easy trek, which won’t last so long and not so tiring.

Once you meet the gorillas, you get to spend just one hour with them, you can photograph them, watch how they interact with each other not affected by your company! It’s such a wonderful experience.

Permits must be purchased in advance of the trek. During busy seasons it may be necessary to book well in advance. Permits are non-refundable.

Day 14: Shopping souvenirs/Barbacue Night/ Kigali Nightlife Experience

At the end of the 14th day, we help our participants with shopping souvenirs, have the barbecue night and full Kigali nightlife experience, we shall provide one more night stay before heading back home or off to your next destination. If you'd like to plan extra days in Rwanda either on the front or back end of this trip then we are happy to help you with suggestions of places we would put on the top of our list to visit. You can combine the Rwanda trip with a roadtrip to Uganda.
